I have only seen 1 buck this entire season (opening weekend Sunday morning, 6 pt. cull which I couldn't take due to the antler restrictions) and nothing else for the entire month of November and this past weekend. I think I know what my problem is because I set my game camera back up almost 3 weeks ago and believe I found the culprit.

That dang stinking young bull elk is still visiting the feeder every single night and then lying underneath it for about 4 hours. I've only had 2 other pictures of a single doe each around 4am-5:30am in the morning.

I really don't want to shoot him during deer season and the neighbors get all bent out of shape. I have cut off the feeder from feed and started piling the corn and protein in the frontyard where he has been visiting the wildbird seed pile each night as well. I also rigged an outside light up high in a tree limb directly over the feed pile. I've checked it through the front door each of the past 4 nights without seeing him from 7pm-10pm when he usually shows up.

What the "sam hill" else can I do so I might be able to take a buck on my place? I know I do have to take care of him once deer season ends because I can't afford to feed that 4 legged feed eating vaccum cleaner of protein feed for my wildlife managment!!!

Why wait till after the season? It's seems pretty obvious he is running off everything else that comes to "his" feeder. Why not take him out of the equation there bud?? It will certainly save you some feeding bill.

Why would the neighbors care if you shoot a whitetail or an elk? If you want me to shoot it I will. I don't care if your neighbors are mad at me or not.

Rgr that...... nieghbors or not...there are no restrictions or seasons on elk in Texas. Be careful though he may have Chronic Wasting Disease.

It's the shooting at night what might create some uneasy feelings...but, that's the only time I know he's coming on my place to feed and eat. He even swam out to one of the little islands in largest pond to graze on the only green vegetation around!

Nope, don't have a problem shooting him, just might take some time field dressing, hanging (frontend loader to the rescue) and quartering up by myself.

The "WHEN" and "WHAT DAY" and current temperature will depend on how I will be able to do or MUST DO at the time of taking him.

Wish me luck...

If you take boliverpete out there make sure you let him use your rifle. He can never get his to work.

Well if he had CWD, he would be the first animal ever recorded in Texas with it, that disease is a misconception in Texas and to this point in time doesn't exist here.

Shoot him at night..there is no law against it..just let the neighbors know that at some point you might have to take the animal at night...

Read up on CWD, he wouldn't be coming in to the feeder. They stop eating for the most part, hence the WASTING part of the equation.

Kyotee1, try to set it up, where there is no feed out there at night. If he is coming in every night, reduce the amount of feed he finds when he is there, or, set your feeder to go off closer to daylight each day, maybe dumping extra feed so he will hang around till shooting light eating.

Just some thoughts.

As for your other points, I don't know about the effect elk have on whitetails, but muley's give them plenty of room.

The only problem I would have with this situation is where I would store all the meat
Turn up the feed times on your feeder and let 'em fatten up some!!!

On a serious note, Sounds like CHC gave some pretty logical advice.

I agree...unless he decides to change his visits to the new timing.

I can't say what I'd do Chris due to the fact I've never faced the problem, but I don't think I would let it affect my hunt more than it already has. What remedy I'd come up with depends on what I'd do with the meat. If I wanted to keep the meat then I'd just take the shot...if not I would have to find someone that would, which around here wouldn't be that hard to do.

As far as the neighbors are concerned, I'd let them have the first whack at the meat if they wanted it - other than that I'd not give them another thought. They're not being effected by the elk are they?

ha ha ha, I guess I resemble that remark. I'm chalking that up to a fluke. It's worked everytime since. Of course I haven't had anything to shoot at yet.

I hear all yalls advice and have tried most of them so far. The only time I've seen him during the day was the Wednesday evening about 5:15pm before Hurricane Rita was to hit Texas. I was already hooked up to my big trailer to head to Galveston picking up main items (firearms, prints, various large machines, paperwork, etc.) and didn't have the time to shoot him then.

Now guess what, the boy showed early this morning at 1:45am and ate all the corn/corn nuggest I put out for him in a pile. Come Friday night or early Saturday morning, that's it and then comes the work!

Shooting him with a bow, can't do it with living on 25 acres...I want to drop him in his tracks and not move an inch. Neck shot only.

Just need to keep him coming with plenty of feed to hold him there for Saturday morning.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions...I got real excited seeing him last night and could barely go back to sleep after seeing him again.

I know one thing...I've got some huge coons that have been feasting on those corn nuggets and protein feed...saw one of them around 8pm sitting on his haunches and eating with both paws!!!

Chris

Where did the elk come from? The reason I ask is if it does not belong to you then you might get in a sticky for shooting the animal even if it is eating everything in sight. Sorry if I am jumping in late and I must have missed the part about where he came from.

I know a guy with a dart gun. Tranquilize him and see if any game preserve wants him. You could probably sell him if you talked to the right people. If it makes you feel better, we havn't seen much activity this year either. Seems like the weather really screwed things up.

The rancher that owned him let him go because his antlers were all messed up and he didn't want him breeding any of his cows. Lots of folks around knew he was out and were trying to get him as well. No ear tags, lip or ear tattoos either.

Problem is solved...

Sauteed in Jack Daniels they are actually quite good. Very red meat and moist.

Young coon is great chicken fried like popcorn chicken pieces and the larger ones are good bbqued slow. You have to get the glands out of the meat before you cook it though, otherwise, it's nasty!!

When I was a kid, growing up in Newcastle, Texas, there was a Baptist preacher that like to squirrel hunt. If you took him out, he did good unless he saw a coon. He would shoot that thing and the squirrel hunt was over.

He would take that coon home, clean it, then put it in a big roasting pan with potatoes and onions, anything you would put with a big beef roast, and then cook it. Everybody that tried it said it was wonderful.

Lora has cooked a couple that have been killed off of the Alfalfa fields where we hunt Javelina and they are good.

The best coon I ever ate though was up at a muzzle-loader shoot, put on by the Ben Clark Long Rifles, out of El Reno, Oklahoma. One of the members of the club had killed several during the winter, and sugar-cured those things like a ham.

The wrapped them in alum. foil and wet burplap and cooked them in a pit they dug. The only way that you could tell it wasn't pork, was by the little bones in the legs.

I like the tranquilizing idea, but I'd be careful selling him, that may be illegal.

As far as what to do with the meat.....I cna help with that.
