Taking my grandson out to Robert Lee this friday for his second deer hunt. He was 8 last year and I bought him a Rossi 243 and he dropped 2 doe's with it, both with 1 shot each. We are hunting a 6500 acre MLD ranch and are looking for a good management or cull Buck for him. He is happy about getting to take his first Buck but is really looking more forward to killing a hog. That boy loves hog hunting videos and wants to get him one. Hopefully he can do both. I am not sure who is more excited to be honest, him or Pa Pa.

It's right on 158 almost smack dab in the middle of town. They have good burgers too. We used to hunt just north of Bronte and we would be coming from Odessa. We usually hit Robert Lee right around 6:30pm on Friday night and would gorge ourselves then head to the lease.

Congratulations! My 9 year old Grandson and I have been hunting together for a couple of years. Two years ago he got a scrub buck(I didn't tell him that) and a hog. Last year he missed a big 10 point but told me "Well, I guess I understand buck fever now".
The problem is being able to get him. His Parents are divorced so they split weekends. Then there is basketball, birthdays, thanksgiving, Xmas, etc. His Mom(my Daughter) has scheduled his Birthday party for 3:00 on opening day of Kids weekend. I don't know whether to cry or puke.
OK, rant is over.

I feel your pain Dave. My Daughter and Son In Law moved to Lubbock a few years ago and we are near Whitney. Makes it difficult to spend as much time with the grandson as I would like. Then when they come in town they have so many people to go see our time is limited. To say the least I cherish every waking minute I have with the boy. Fortunatly my cousin has the MLD place fairly near them so we are able to do this now for the second year. We are looking to get a place out west together next year so we can do more of the family and friends type hunts. Ox190, thanks for the tip, we are going to try and go check it out. I'll post up lots of pictures next week.

Had a blast even though we came up empty handed. Arrived early Friday afternoon to find out my cuz was held up in Louisianna and had to catch a later flight. I knew where me and the Grandson was going to hunt but a buddy of mine and his Son where hunting also and there blind was in the back of a 6500 acre lease and I had never been there. I decided to just hang out that afternoon and let the boys drive the Mule up and down the 2 1/2 mile driveway, and they did, and they did again and again, LOL. I did go out and pour a bag of corn out about 100 yards from the stand about 50 yards across. Saturday AM we are in the blind and the sun starts to rise and low and behold, COWS!!!! All either standing or bedded down right where I poured the corn out, even had one standing under the feeder looking up at the spinner waiting!!! All we saw AFTER the cows left was 1 Doe with a yearling so we opted to let her walk. Sat eve hunt, just climbed up the blind and got settled in and Cyrus say's " Pa Pa, I have a headache." He went from bad to worse, a minute later he was sickern a dog hangin his head out the door. Back to camp and with a cold rag, dark quite, cold camper he finally eased and was out for the night. Sunday morning, we head to the very back of the lease. The stand was a tall tower on the side of a hill over looking a canyon. Everything back here will cut ya, bite ya, scratch ya, hurt ya if you know what I mean. Big Buck country! The sun started rising enough to shed a little light at the feeder and I see 3 Deer, 1 chases the others off and he's a hoss for sure, a big bruiser 8 that you could easily fit your open hand between his inside ear tips and his inside beam, wide and tall. Unfortunately we are hunting Doe's and spikes. A few minutes later out steps and old, old 6 pointer, almost black in body with a brisket that nearly slapped the ground when he walked. His rack was near as wide as the 8 and had a small kicker stickin behind his G2. Watched him for several minutes and he slipped off in the thicket, had a few pigs come by but we where wanting a Deer so we passed. Nothing else ever showed. Back at camp I tell the leasees about the big 6 and what do they say. Man! Why didn't you shoot it? Please don't say that I said! Probably had something to do with the waiver I signed saying a leasee had to be with us to shoot a management Buck. Oh well, no harm no foul, had a great time with friends and family, saw some great Deer and awesome country. DIDN'T see any Rattle Snakes! And got to spend some quality time with my favorite huntin and fishin buddy, my Grandson. One other thing, something was said around the camp and I looked at Cyrus and said, " What happens at Deer camp. Stays at Deer camp." I got a call Monday from my daughter wanting to know what's up with " What happens at Deer camp Stays at Deer Camp?" Evidently Cyrus won't tell her a thing about camp, the hunt, notta, nothing!!! Heh, Heh, Heh, that's my boy! It's early and we have the rest of the season to go. I'm sure he'll get another chance or two.

Great story, I love the part about "What happens at deer camp stays at deer camp", kids are great and I love getting my boys out. Sounds like you had a great time other then him getting sick.

Thanks. Yes, I knew I had the boy on the right track when we where leaving in the truck and he told me that just being in the outdoors and seeing the sun rise and hangin out at camp was really what it was all about, killing a Deer is just icing on the cake. Put a grin on my face that ajax couldn't wash off. That is something I've always told him either before a hunting or fishing trip.

That is a great story! The memories with sons and grandsons are priceless when they are this age. I am also very glad to hear that like our group, many are teaching "Deer Camp" lessons to our new generation of hunters. Here is what we got all of our kids to remind them of "What happens at the ranch stays at the ranch".......
"Call 'em up close and shoot 'em in the face"

I like the hat, have to admit it took me a minute to figure out the back, but boy, I like that idea.
