So in the market for a new range finder and was planning on doing my comparisons and shopping in a few weeks, however while reading the newspaper this morning I hear something on tv. Low and behold it is a infomercial for a bushnell arc 1000, anyone use one while bow hunting? Seems to have some pretty good features for both bow and rifle.

Unless you are doing extreme mountain goat hunting with steep up and down hill shots the arc is a farce imo. In archery it doesn't make a difference when you are less than 20' up. I wouldn't pay more for a range finder just to get that feature. I would however buy one with longer range than you think you will shoot. The Nikon I have says it's a 330 yard range but in reality it will only pic up a barn at that range. 280 is about all it's worth. I will get a 600 yard plus model next time because a 500 yard shot on a coyote is one I would try. 300 yard max on deer.

I was thinking about the Bushnell Arc 1000 also! I want something small that will fit in my pocket. I have the old original Bushnell 500 from back in the 90's! It has served me well but it finally died and time for another.

Like passthru said, for archery you're good to go with a standard range finder. There are several models that can calculate angle compensation, but for the most part, the standard models will work just fine.

But if you bow hunt in the mountains out of a tree stand you can be looking at a much longer drop when shooting downhill.

that's more of what I am looking or taking the wife unit out and being on top of a mountain and shooting down into a valley with the rifle.

I just bought the Bushnell Chuck Adams model and am very happy with it. I'm a ground hunter and prob wont be shooting farther than 40 yards so all the other bells and whistles aren't needed for how I like to hunt. Just wanted something reliable and found a great deal at the time on ebay.

Steep angles are an issue if you are hill hunting with a bow or rifle. I personally though need to have one for longer ranges. If nothing else but to know when I shouldn't take the shot.

I have the leupold rx1000 with dna. It has the bow and rifle mode. Have used it for both bow hunting and long range shooting and it has worked great for me with no problems. Well worth the money IMHO. Has taken me out to 900 yards shooting my rifle and shooting my bow out to 40 yards with out making a bad shot. It was the upper model of that line when we bought them but I got it for a really good deal because we wanted to buy three of them all the same and they didn't have the basic model, so we made them upgrade us to this one for the same price and we saved about 100 bucks ea from cabelas.

My range finder has arc - use it all the time. 20 feet up everything thing looks further away than it usually is.... but I gave up on judging distances along time ago. You can always just check the distance to another tree at eye level and forgo the arc..

Definitely get one with arc. It makes a big difference on those shot angles. I have a Bushnell 1500 and it works great but I wish it had Arc.

I use a bushnell chuck Adams at the moment, my next one will be a Nikon. Nikon has a much better display with bigger numbers.
