You said, "your best friend" I voted #1 a I'd be there in a flash so he could help me find MY deer and get it tagged.

Just someone else on the lease... maybe, but more than likley I'd say, "man that sucks, what are you gonna do now?"

Talking to our GW I learned that
#1 things go much better when you are honest.
#2 they have some personal discression, ours would probably take the deer and let him pay the fee for Hunters for The Hungry. They understand an "honest mistake" sometimes.

I hear you, on the ranch down south this would be a no brainer, but if the guy were on an East Texas lease with 25 guys on it that would be tough. I have friends and family members on a lease a little north of Livingston, you can't fart on that place without someone asking something. The GW has them so scared about these antler restrictions they would throw their mother under the bus to stay on his/her good side, if somebody messes up the GW is called. Now 5 years ago these do gooders were shooting deer caught in hog traps, go figure.

The ONLY ethical answer is #2

- even though the wording of the question (nice hunting with you) makes it sound like you're being a jerk.

#1 and #3 are both lies and unethical.

option #4, stab your buddy with a shed antler killing him, that way you can say he died fighting the deer and he won't have to endure the shame of getting kicked off the lease

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

That's the kind of leases I was raised on just north of there..but were 40-80 members. You'd be suprised what ppl don't know.

#1 I don't hunt with anyone who wouldn't do the same for me. Mistakes happen. I burn a tag, everything's back in balance. Disposing of the deer just makes it two crimes. But, #4, is there a smoker in camp?

Leave the deer lay till he calls the GW out and explain his dilema at the location. Let the GW handle it with me their with him.

A good friend wouldn't put you in that position. He would do the right thing and call the game warden himself and take his medicine.

Personally I would never put anyone in that situation. I would just deal with it at the time and take both deer in to the processor or do one myself if the game warden was not around to take my phone call. What do I do, call operation game thief on myself? My game manager can figure it out on his own. Don't need to put a lie in front of another lie. He would probably check out both kill sites not hearing two shots.

Your fines will probably not be more than the lease fee and taking your buddies tag is basically wasting his money so you are both screwed. What is the point in that???

the depends for me is how I feel the game manager will respond and if he is an understanding guy or not... basically my relationship with him is the deciding factor

I would never bury it

The problem is the "buddy" failed to verify what was behind his target wether he was excited or what have you. I beleave he is not very concious hunter. how would you handel it if he shot through and hit another hunter or a child? I beleave that is one of the rules to the hunter education corse.

I'd bury the body if it were another hunter or child.

All of you who wouldn't help out a friend are not the kind of people I would want to be friends with.

Let me guess, you are around 20 years old and expect people to do stuff for you. It's called responsibility which some people lack.

Waiting on a warden to arrive could allow the deer to spoil...who wants that to happen. BTW, I plan on setting my cruise on 85 and rolling North today, think I'll call ahead to the towns and tell them to just mail me my tickets.

If I'm burning my tag, I'm taking the bigger one
