My grand kids found this in a pond that's normally dry, but it caught some rain this last rain we got. I have no idea what it is any help?

I agree it looks like a horseshoe crab initially, but horseshoe crabs don't have forked tails. This is a relative of the horseshoe crab, an Apus cancriformis, commonly known as an apus.

They are also known as tadpole shrimp, and have a very quick lifespan...eggs are resistant to drought so you may see them in old tanks when rain brings up some water and the eggs hatch.

Probably due to all the rain we have been getting, unless you haven't gotten any rain, in which case you probably just have a population of them

Tell them they are more than welcome. We have a tank that gets them when it rains as well and the kids love catching them and bringing them to the house for momma. It's amazing how long those eggs can stay in the ground then hatch once it rains.
