What is a good brand and a good price these days on an AR? More of an entry level gun. Hogs and varmints.

Seems that the $8-900 level has some good products. The best? Lots of factors in that. There is a good thread on that topic here:
http://www.texashuntingforum.com/forum/u..._Go#Post3520400

My opinion, most of the name brand are pretty good entry level. I like Stag if you want entry level. There are a lot of factors to consider, some do effect performance but most of the upgrades almost come down to personal taste.

I like and use 1-7 twist chrome barrels, mid length gas systems, m16 bolts that are Boron coated, Vortex flash hiders, Tubbs springs with H buffers, Ergo grips, Magpul trigger guard, 4# Timney trigger, LMT SOPMOD stock All off that is different from an most entry level but if your goal is to pop a few hogs and varmints it really doesn't make that much difference.

Then there is the "reliability" factor which really is like insurance. You pay more for parts that are speced and tested more but not that much better than a good quality part. A Colt 6920 verses a Whindham comes to mind.

And they are pretty much like adult Legos. and you can start another thread on best scope, best magazines heck even best bag to carry it in lol.

I recently added a Windham Armory SRC model to my collection after hearing nothing but good reports from current owners. It has all metal construction and excellent fit and finish for an AR that cost just $899.

For a budget gun, my S&W Sport has been a pretty awesome. I don't miss the forward assist or dust cover at all, but I would probably want them on an actual "working" gun. Mine was $713.00 out the door just before the stupid started.

I love my Mossberg MMR Tactical. For what little money I have in it really like it! Look them up.

PSA is a really nice rifle. I shoot it more than my Colt and Spikes.

This for sure. Has all the features you should want, 1/7 barrel, FA BCG, etc.

I also recently added a Windham to my guns. I have yet to shoot it but my FFL guy has one that is a shooter and no fails. I had him shoot my favorite ammo through it and it was at 1moa. That's much better than my CMMG gun. I'm looking forward to playing with it.

I got the chance to shoot my Windham SRC for the first time yesterday and was very impressed. The trigger is heavy as expected, so I may replace the springs down the road sometime. The groups were much better than I expected, but I'm still getting used to the inexpensive, red dot sight I added to it. Wanting this to be a gun for short range, quick hit usage, I don't see the need for a scope.

Those .223 rounds were much louder than I expected.

Many ARs are adequate, but IMO, try to get an AR that has a mid-length gas system. These function extremely well.

Yes. A shorter barrel will make it extremely loud. Feel it in your sinus' too.

16" barrel and a mid length gas system, carbine gas systems are getting better.

Another vote for the M&P Sport, I'm very happy with mine.

I am very happy with my M&P15T... T for Troy, not the current Magpul variant.

Windham is a good deal for the money. Another one not mentioned that's good is Del-Ton.

Diamondback (AKA Taurus) AR's I would stay away from. We have had a couple come through the shop and they were not great by any means.

For an affordable AR I would seriously look at Delton. They are a good affordable AR, and the folks over at Delton are a great group who stand behind their product.
