Well I am from Washington "Moved here 2 months ago" and am a little disgusted with the public range practices here. In the last 5 states I have been in you pay per person and bring as many weapons as you want. Here the money grubbing seems to be rampant. Paying per gun just seems goofey to me and a bit to much money focused. Not to mentioned the range I went to had a recording at cease fire insinuating customers may be stupid twice, then the owner made a statement that breaking a rule would be aginst the law and theft of service. Really WTF over?
I would call that breaking a rule and asked to leave. So insults directed at customers and calling the cops? All I can say is WOW!He also decided to complain about his rent as well. Why do I care? Do I as a customer need to hear that? No.
Anyway enough of that......
Is there anywhere around by the kingwood area I can just go out in the woods and plink? Shoot my steel gongs ect? Or a private club I can join where I can bring or use steel targets at distance? Im also looking for public hunting areas as well with the season around the corner.
Thanks.
TC.

Never heard of being charged per gun

As far as public hunting there isn't as much land as where you're from so it's gonna be tougher but that's just what you get down here. Pay to play type of deal

The Sam Houston national forest isn't that far from Kingwood.

which range did you go to if you don't mind me asking? seems like that particular one might just be a rip off and I wouldn't use it as a stereotype for a typical range in Texas. Also what area are you in, I'm sure someone can post up some more affordable/reasonable ranges.

You should have checked the "rules" before you moved here. up

If your getting this worked up over target practice at the range, you better take a valium and drink 2 beers before you go out to public land to hunt---lets just say its a little different than Washington State.

You get caught plinking/target shooting in the Sam Houston National Forest, you will surely be given a financial incentive to not do that again. Found that out the hard way.

Have never been to a range with that kind of setup.

Not really a Texas issue. More of a "do your homework and don't go to a crappy range" issue.

Where did I state I was worked up? Just stating my experience at two ranges I went to on sat. FYI I have hunted all over and Public lands about the same experience everywhere.

"You should have checked the "rules" before you moved here"
So you assume I moved here just to go plinking?

Thanks to all whom provided worth while info ;-)

Look for a lease or buy your own land. Some ranges charge per gun. I dont go there because that seems crazy to me. Others just charge by the person. Im on a private gun club. They are around, but most have significant wait lists. Good luck.

Ranges are hit and miss. Flat fee of $10-$20 for shooting all day in Dallas. Sometimes the employees / owners are friendly, sometimes not.

If this range issue set you off, you are in for a heck of surprise when you scope out the public lands on opening morning. With very little public land in Texas, what we do have becomes overcrowded every weekend.

welcome to Texas.

Most ranges just charge by the day 15-20 bucks. A few have idiots running them.

Pubic hunting is not very productive due to availability and over crowding. You can be drawn on some wildlife refuges that have good hunting. Check out Texas Parks and Wildlife website.

We have some great hunting but most of it is private and will cost you $1500-$4000 for year round hunting rights for big and small game.

Doesn't get much cheaper but can get a lot more expensive.

Do a search on this site for posts on draw hunts and public land hunting. Also check out the outfitter and land for lease sections.

"TC...what's your opinion on high fences, feeders, and antler restrictions?"

Im fine with them. I just see them as options. Where I came from it was very restrictive. No bating, no electronics, no crossbows ect......
Every rule has a reason. Some may not agree but meh I don't want to spend my hunting energy debating. I just want to fill the freezer.
I have no problems with paying to play if I get year round access to plink and hunt without being shoulder to shoulder.
If anyone has a lease available or has info about one somewhat close to kingwood/Houston shoot me a PM.
Thanks.
