I have a Ruger 10/22 black and wood and I want to fix it up. First purchase was a Kidd bolt release. It is still in route but I want to know what is worth doing and what is just a gimmick to get my money. Also, if you could provide brands as well it would be very helpful. Thanks for your input!

I sent in my wife's 10/22 trigger to Brimstone Gunsmithing and got their tier 2 treatment.
http://brimstonegunsmithing.com/ruger-1022-1/

It actually includes the auto bolt release mod. I've got to say that it made a world of a differenc in the trigger pull. Her 10/22 has a very crisp break. Best I can compar it to are the top of the line 2 stage AR triggers, Gisele and such. I thought it was a heck of a deal @ $70. I've heard others get the same treatment they claim it comparable to a Kidd full trigger kit. But this way you don't have to do anything. I've also heard Brimstone's tier 1 kit is good too.
It only took about 3 weekks to get it back.

In summary, I highly recommend it. I have a 10/22 as well with only the auto release mod in terms of the trigger group. My wife's 10/22 is vastly superior in accuracy all because of the trigger.
If I sound like a salesman for Brimstone it's because I was supremely impressed how well it turned out and very annoyed my wife can now out shoot me with our repsective 10/22's.

this

and search "JB weld trick for 10/22" and you will be set
no need send it off if you can do these mods and have a much better trigger and no need to send it off and you learn the trigger group

Tactical solutions Barrel
Extended mag release

A stock that will allow you to free float the barrel and does not use the barrel band
Houge overmold stocks are nice but a little on the heavier side.

Thanks for the suggestions. Has anybody used the Kidd aftermarket parts?

Are the bolt buffers any good? What exactly are they supposed to do?

I swapped barrels, stock, bolt release, hammer, and mag release. Shoots tight groups mainly due to Tactical Solutions barrel. No need to send the gun off for auto bolt release. You can buy the part for $10 and swap yourself in 10 minutes. As far as trigger, all I did was switch to a Volquartsen hammer kit for $40 and it made a huge difference.

My 10/22s are all KIDD other than the trigger group and receiver. KIDD barrels are the best around IMO. Also the KIDD receiver pins are a must have to me. Makes the receiver and trigger group like a single piece.

All my triggers are brimstone. I recommend their tier 1 trigger job. Takes a while for turnaround, but completely worth it. I like their wide flat triggers added when they do my trigger job.

I bought a bell carlson anschutz stock for my heavy barrel 10/22 and it is a great stock. But make sure you check them really good when they arrive. I had some factory defect issues with my first one. One of my 10/22s I cut the stock down past the barrel band, reshaped it, widened the barrel channel for free float, and refinished it. To make it a super light iron sighted rifle.

If you buy quality parts its really easy to get over $1K into a 10/22 quick.

With a little know how, some time, files, polishing wheels and just a dab of JB Weld you can make your trigger 2.5#'s in less than a day, most of that time spent waiting for the epoxy to cure. You can also change your bolt release to work better without grinding on it, JB Weld again. I would send my bolt out to CPC for their work, but the rest can be done at the kitchen table. A bolt buffer might work, might not. I have them in all my 10/22's because they don't fall out like the factory pin does.
If you change to a match chambered barrel you will probably need a new extractor. Power Custom makes a good one. I use Volquartson's. Lots of places to spend money. I had $800 without glass in my first build. My next build cut that figure in half. Do what work you can and spend the savings on good ammo.
