Reasonable or not, it doesn't matter. It is your land. If he doesn't respect that, it's his problem and he's not much of a friend.

As for the registered Angus, I would shoot them as a matter of principle.

Ask him if you can come shoot clays in his apartment. BMG's aren't rimfires, that projectile takes a substantial backstop to control. Your response would have been mine too. I think he needs to read up on .50's to see what they can do. Might be a wee bit much for pigs, kind of like a shotgun for mosquitoes.

Best of the West doesnt allow 50bmg anymore, unless something changed in the last couple months. Nothing bigger than a 300 now, I think. Too many shooters couldnt control the round and the bullets didnt impact the berm.

I alos thnk you are right to say no.

Good idea! I'll even offer to use a measly .410, I'm sure it'll be fine with him!

No different than if he bought a 4-wheeler and wanted to let his 6 yo nephew race it on your property. Answer is no.

Not at all. Your land, your rules. It's not like he is going to lose the property in a lawsuit if he does something stupid. Don't pay for peoples stupidness. That is like a person hunting on 20 acres of land with a 30.06 or .270. You have to be smart and shoot from an elevated position for your round not to leave the fence line. Some people don't have that intuition. The example I use is of an oldtimer who has about 20 acres a mile or so down the road. He built a wooden deer stand about 30 feet off the ground. It sticks out above the treeline like a sore thumb. Years ago he built 8-10 foot dirt berms around his land and made shooting lanes. I have run into him a couple of times and he uses either a 30-06 or 270. (saw the shells on his vest in those elastic bands. He will only shoot if the he is sure the round will go into the ground if it passes thru a deer. He does everything possible to contain his rounds. There are no houses withing a mile of him or so.

Your land, your house, your rules.

Now if he springs for the bulldozer (and you are ok with that), have him build up 20 berms somewhere and you can can shoot to your hearts' content.

Either way it's YOUR decision.

I don't think you are being unreasonable. Shooting a BMG might draw some unwanted legal attention also. Besides looking like a cannon, they are loud.

For civilians, the 50BMG is an answer to a question we have never been asked. Heck, even snipers are moving to 338s primarily.

It is YOUR land and you are NOT a shooting range. It is perfectly normal to take safety into consideration.

Heres something else I heard. I dont remember the full story BUT a guy was at or near quail creek gun range (fm 1171/35w)was shooting his 50 cal. Then several miles away(3+) at Texas Motor Speedway some lady was in her RV when she got hit by a stray 50 cal bullet on the same day. She was taken to a hospital and it made the news. The guy figured out it was his rifle and turned himself in.

Now thats as much as I remember But the point is The liability would be HUGE for a stray bullet. And if you were my friend I would understand why you would say no to my request to shot a anticar size round on YOUR property. His priorities seem a little off if he bought a 50 and still lived in a apartment. loco

Partially correct story. It did not come from Quail Creek but rather a farm/ranch. Don't believe Quail Creek has ever allowed 50s.

I really do not understand that comment.
Why buy a Ferrari as they go faster than any posted speed limit and are more expensive than a lot of homes.

50's are fun, no doubt. But if you shoot them at night with tracers you can really see how far they go after they ricochet. The ranges used for 50cal at Fort Hood have a pretty incredible amount of space and a natural terrain feature like a hill for a backstop, at least the ranges I remember.

Well the point is it is indeed a true story. I remember it well. This is a story every 50 Cal shooter should keep in mind.

Quail creeks shooting range points the opposite direction of the speedway, been going there for twenty years. Good people at quail creek.

I would say that your land, your rules. Plus in Texas if a bullet crosses a property line it is considered trespassing.
