Getting ready to purchase my son his first bow, and would like any recommendations. He will be 14 in a few days, average size, average strength. He will be using the bow for hunting next year. Looking at spending around 250-300 on this one, if he takes to it and really enjoys it as I think he will, I will probably get him a new one in about 3 years if necessary, so I'm looking for this one to get him too about 17 years old.

A Hoyt is doing it right??
How about a Diamond, Mathews, Bear, Bowtech ??
If he bought one of those, is he doing it wrong?
Personally, I bought my son a Mathews Ignition. I got a good deal on it and it's a great bow.
I believe that most companies make a decent kids' bow..
As someone else said, get with Wes. If there is a deal to be had on one of the brnds he sells, he'll dang sure hook you up.
But don't listen to someone who lists their personal choice and tells you you're doing it wrong if you buy anything else.

I think all of the major players in the bow market make quality youth bows these days. As easy as it is to change limbs and draw modules I would get him a bow that he can grow with and use for years, but if he enjoys it and gets hooked like a lot of us do, and with all the advances in technolighy he will be wanting something bigger and better all the time, so an inexpensive one might be the way to go. Check out the classifieds section on Archery Talk, lots of great prices on bows over there.

At 14, if he's average height & weight, he's probably between a youth bow, and an adult bow. My son shot a PSE youth bow from age 9 to about 12 or 13. Then he began to outgrow the youth bow, but was not ready for an adult bow. At age 15, I bought him a used adult bow, and it fit him.
It seems that most youth bows adjust from like 20"-26" on the draw length, and most adult bows start at 28". At least that was the case when I was looking at bows a few years back.
At 14, I wouldn't waste my time and money on a youth bow. Before long, he'll be shooting the same bow that your shooting.

Just break down and buy him a PSE X Force, that way he will already hav the best bow on the market!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We went to the local bow shop to buy a Mathews for my son for his first bow at age 13. I walked into the archery shop with every intention of buying an Ignition or a Mustang. When I told the shop owner what I wanted he said I want you to try those bows but I'm going to sell you a Martin Bengal. That kind of blew my away to be honest. I played along and sure enough we walked out of there with a fully rigged Bengal with arrows for around $560.00. That is the smoothest shooting bow I have ever had in my hands and quieter than anything I have ever shot. What was really freaky about the whole thing was the bow that I drew was set up at 70 pounds and the shop owner asked me what I thought it was set at and I told him about 45 to 50 pounds. My son made his first bow kill on a pig Friday evening with it. My neighbor was in a tripod stand next to us, (we were in a ground blind about 30 yards from him)and the bow was so quiet he never heard him shoot.
