I have hunted them North of Plains, Texas towards Sundown and Lehman. Sandy areas North of Plains have been good in the past. Texas Tech did a transmittor study in the area I hunted in the past to monitor movements.

I was talking to a friend last night about Prarie Chickens. Said they hunted up around the Canadian River, but the season is like two days long. Said they saw lots of birds though. He didn't like to eat them said they were all dark meat and couldn't find a way to cook them that wasn't tough as a boot.

Your friend is right. Unless they have access to some milo or other grains they taste like the sage and weeds they feed on. North of Plains, we would walk the sage flats during the day flushing them and then late in the afternoon they would fly into the windmill areas for water.
In the Spring they really put on a show for the females. Reminds you of the Prarie Grouse on the old Walt Disney shows. You can usually hear them strumming, but it is very rare to see the showplace.

Watching the chickens strut is way more fun than hunting them. They have just been placed on, or are soon to be on the endagered species list. They're almost out of habitat in alot of places in the panhandle due to overgrazing and it has become a major issue with alot of counties and the Txpwd.

I do not hunt them anymore since they are poor table fare. I do try to make it out there when the rancher notices they are strutting. I notice the area in Yoakum County, I am talking about still has a season, on October 16/17, 2004. Daily bag limit is 2. (Free permit is required). Hope the Texas Tech field study finds a way to help the prarie chickens. The land is very harsh in the area where they are plentiful. Coyotes are thick in that area this year and are the main enemy of the prarie chickens.

I don't know how accurate what I read was but, I heard that only Kansas and Oklahoma still have seasons for them because they have been put on the endangered species list. ( I could be wrong but I read it somewhere the last couple of days. I guess you shouldn't believe everything you read on the internet though LOL)

Season opens for them in KS this weekend and bag limit is 2 birds.

Texas still has a two day season. It was several weeks ago in October, 2004 in Yoakum County. Last week while quail hunting north of Plains, Texas we saw 30 fly into a windmill area for water very late in the afternoon. Might have a season in other counties also, I no longer hunt them; poor table fare.

My party killed 6 chickens in Cochran County this past October just North of Plains. I have killed chickens there the past two seasons, but before that they were pretty scarce. We saw 125-150 birds.

This is far away and a few years back, and they were Greater Prairie Chickens and Sharptail Grouse on a ranch in the Sandhills region of Nebraska. I shot a couple of each along with some Ringneck pheasant. They reminded me of a 2 pound or so Dove when I cleaned them. I guess cause they eat a lot more leafy vegatation than pheasants do their meat is dark. The last time Ron and I were in Nebraska we saw about 20 or so up on the highlines, spread out on each side of a power pole and there was a Redtail Hawk on the pole, I guess the chickens were just keeping an eye on him.
