my sidearm when hog hunting is a Ruger Blackhawk Bisley .45 colt with 7.5" barrel, thinking bout getting a .45 colt carbine to complement it. I got a couple hog infested pastures where a bullet that drops substantially at 150 yards or so but still packs a punch is called for. just looking for some input on recoil out of a carbine (compared to .44 mag carbine), good hunting bullets/loads, irons or optics etc. appreciate any input. I usually hunt with short actions like 7mm-08 and .308.

I have a Win 94 trapper in 45 Colt and even running it hot it doesn't kick near as bad as my 44 mag Marlin that I no longer have. If you are going use jacketed bullets and run hot loads lean toward bullets made to work with the 454 Casull(sp). I found that regular 45 colt bullets made for pistol velocities are to soft. With the testing I done I didn't like any of the Hornady XTP bullets. The regular ones blew up and the MAG version were inconsistent. I really like the Nolser Partition, no longer made, and the Swift A Frame. I have my trapper set up for close range and use a set of XS sights on it.

I had a Win 94 trapper in 45LC. It was absolutely the most inaccurate rifle I have ever shot.I shot different ammo, with and without scope. Could never figure out what was wrong with it. You may have better luck, but for me it is a 50 yard max rifle.

I have two, a Marlin 1894S which was a special run "Guide Gun" chambered in 45 Colt, it has a 16 1/4" ported barrel. Then I have a Rossi R92 Scout rifle. I load them both with a 290-grain home cast bullet at 35.0K PSI and they deliver quite the punch.

Here is the 1894S, a short bugger! Not many of these surface on the auction sites and if they do they are a "hard, tough" buy.

The "go to" 45 Colt lever gun seems to be the Rossi R92. Mine is the scout rifle with the raised synthetic comb and scout mounted scope. I've shot quite a few hows with this setup and shoot it quite a bit more than the Marlin.

Another Rossi R92 to consider would be the rifle chambered in 454 Casull. There are a couple of benefits to that rifle besides it being able to shoot the 45 Colt cartridge as well. It has a square cut but stock rather than the curve butt stock of the standard R92 plus a nice recoil pad. The magazine is threaded into the receiver to prevent it being knocked out under the heavy recoil. With the threaded tube you can load it through a port on the like many tube fed 22 rimfires. The 454 Casull can fire a 45 Colt, the actual chamber cut is .030" longer than the 45 Colt.

All of three of these are hog gitters and do it with a very classic cartridge.

For what it is worth, I shot a Water Mochasin in the head at 10yds with one of these. One shot/one kill. RIGHT on target. I LOVED that rifle! Accuracy wise, I am a believer, but I wouldnt shoot over 30yds@a hog w/it!
