Was in my office and notice this tuft of hair off one of my whitetails that I shot 5 plus years ago. There were these bugs in it. Can't figure where it came off the mount, but saw more of these bugs on the mount. What are they? How should I get rid of them. Not on any of my other mounts.

Correction. Majority of them are in the ears and the hair is falling out like crazy.

They must be the same ones that caused me to loose the hair on top of my head.

Alpine Taxidermy said it was dust mites. What I am seeing is not the bug, but the egg sacks. But they couldn't tell me how to kill them. Best I saw on Google was sunlight. Guess they are all coming down and sitting in the sun in the back yard all weekend.

Move this to the Taxidermy forum, you will get an answer there faster.

I'm not buying the dust mite answer. Too big for that. I'm thinking some sort of beetle larvae and what you're seeing is the larvae stage before it changes into a beetle. Carpet beetle perhaps. They eat the hair follicles and skin.

Here's a thread I had with a somewhat similar problem.

Get it away from your other mounts ASAP.

The photo is a bit unclear, but they are possibly dermestids. If so, get professional help ASAP to save this mount, as well as your others.

Looks like molted dermestid beetle larvae to me. These can be a problem.

you should bag this mount and fumigate it. Make sure and fumigate the room where your other mounts are as well as it is possible they have been invaded as well. Don't delay and do it asap.

sac bearing moth, lays egg then hatches into larvea, then larvea eats at the hair.Problem is killing them, they attach under the hair so spraying the mount on top of the hair does not kill them. You have to brush the hair back and spray to get to them. we have seen this alot this year, not sure why. If you see a small gold colored moth flying around kill it.

Looks like molted dermestid beetle larvae to me. Spray with Raid, and wipe off.
