I want to buy an inexpensive bolt action, left hand rifle for my daughter. I am thinking a 243 or 30-06. What do you think of the Ruger or other bargain rifles I am seeing?
Thanks

Savage lefties are the easiest to come by, and they'll shoot tighter than she can.

Just a thought (and coming from a lefty shooter), maybe teach her to shoot on a RH gun (lefty of course). I learned on a RH gun then when I bought my first I bought a LH and was like learning all over. Plus easier to buy accessories, etc for a RH.

Whatever you end up with, hope she enjoys it!

Running a right hand bolt from a bench is just fine. Any other position, and you're like a pig on roller skates. I'm a lefty, and the first LH rifle a purchased and learned to drive properly made up my mind that I would never use a right hand rifle again.

...agree

I can shoot a RH, but for me using the LH makes for a faster, more reliable shot.

I would be lost if I ever were to pick up a LH gun. With the exception of a bullpup design I have just gotten used to dealing with right handed guns. I have bigger issues when it comes to semi-auto handguns than rifles. I like being able to see the chamber on a bolt action gun. Go to a stock that doesn't require moving the on-hand, and cycling the bolt becomes much more do-able.

Lefty here. Picked up a Savage 110 LH in 30-06 a dozen years ago. Still good to go.

For your daughter you might want to put a muzzle brake on it unless she is completely non-recoil averse. Just a suggestion.

Another lefty here. I was always happy with my Savage choice of a left hand bolt action in .308. I have no problems recommending the Savage to anyone looking for a good shooting rifle at a decent price.

It's not the cheapest, but it is a good deal, and since you're a THF'r, PM if you like and I can take some off the price:

PM sent. Leaning towards the Savage Axis with a Nikon 3-9x40 BDC Reticle.. I think she could handle the 30-06, she is 33. Just a late starter to the hunting!

Another Lefty here, I have a Savage 110 in 270 win. Out of the box, checking with nothing other than a bore sight, I took it out hunting. First shot took an 8pt buck. The next two shots took down two coyotes in succession. One was on a 'dead' run, at about 60yrds. I have the 110 package with the Bushnell scope at the time. I have since upgraded the scope and would not hesitate to hunt any North American animal with it. Very accurate, reliable weapon. I would recommend this same package in 243 for your daughter, she would have a great gun for about any game in Texas.

I have this one. Reliable and accurate, with minimal recoil.

OK, I got a Savage Axis 243 picked out. I plan to take one coil out to lighten the trigger pull and mount a Nikon ProStaff 3-9x40 BDC with quality rings and mount.

Don't buy her a cheap rifle. Buy her a ruger compact or browning micro

Both are offered in left handed actions.

I am left handed and own both right and left handed bolt guns, but for her first rifle get her a quality gun

So you bought a rifle and took it hunting without ever taking it to the range?

That's not very wise and certainly not a testament to the quality of the rifle

Why so critical, it worked for him? He may keep his shots under 50 yds. At least he didn't leave any animals wounded. Maybe he got the rifle and didn't have time to go to the range. His experience is better than those who spend two hours at the range and then leave animals wounded because they try 450 yd shots that they have never made. Not many people can say their first three shots were successful.

The Axis is in my price range and I am counting on the good reputation of Savage Rifles. I think the Nikon is a quality scope so all in all I think this is a good entry level package.

I've owned and shot L/H rifles for more than 45 yrs. Money wise
and trigger and out of box accuracy stay with Savage. I'd get above
a entry level weapon with a fairly heavy bbl for accuracy and recoil.
May want to look at a 25-06. Don

I got a Axis .243 and mounted a Nikon 3-9X40 BDC scope. Hope to dial it in this weekend. ONLY 49 days til we head to Texas!

I have about $460 in the rig so far. I still want to work on the trigger some.

I got the Nikon off Ebay for 130+ and bought good rings from the gun store. Axis was on sale for 287.00. For a LH outfit I think this is great! My brodder has a 22-250 he massaged the trigger spring on. I'd like about a 3# pull.
Going to break it in with Federal Premium 85 grain Trophy Copper
