I hunted on my aunts place about 5 miles south of Lampasas on 183. Deer aren't the biggest but you should have plenty there. There is a game ranch not far from you and they are notorious for escaping wildlife. You might get some bonus animals. We've shot several axis deer over the years and even had a buffalo wonder on the place. Really wanted to shoot it.

I'd agree...lots of smaller ones. Plenty of foxes too. Quite a few axis roaming all over that part of the hill country

Lots of deer. The more you kill, the more they come. I was invited to hunt at a friend's land which is at the east of Lampasas last year. It was the late season, 4 deer coming to our feeder. After I shot 2, then 8 deer showed up few days later. I only visit his land 4 times: 1 scouting, 2 hunts and 1 to help him. I feel I could use up all my deer tags there if I was serious hunt.

I am guessing you will be hunting in the Watson community area?

My family lease is about 5 miles to the west of Watson on the South Rocky Creek off CR-208. I have been on this lease for 5 years and the numbers are fairly low but some decent free-range small lease type deer with proper management over time.

Depending on location/direction from Watson, will make a difference as there is some really wide open plains/prairie lands with much fewer numbers of deer but pockets of over populated areas back to the east/north of Watson. A lot of the area may have been over hunted (mine was) due to smaller pieces of land and poor management. There is an exotic game ranch in the northwest corner of 183 & CR-208 that has some really nice WT deer and various exotics... there may be others in the area (there is another one west of my lease corner CR-208 & 207) where some might escape... about the only exotic I have seen is a porcupine at my lease (they are fairly new to that area).

FWIW ... I grew up in Burnet county and am fairly familar with the entire area, been hunting since early 90s in northern/northeastern Burnet county in the Mesquite and Rocky creeks watershed, Briggs, Oakalla, Kempner, etc. areas... What is the name of the ranch or ranch owner? I might know them.

PMK remindered me. Yes, the deer population may depend on where you will hunt. I have a friend leased a land at the west of Lampasas 2 years ago. He didn't have a good season. Only shot a small hog the whole year.

I was born and raised in Burnet as well. Hunted just about everywhere except the eastern part of the county. Too many goats in that area.

small world copperhead! did you gradute BHS? what year? 1977 here ...

I currently have several places around Burnet county, one about a mile NW of Briggs (very few deer, no hogs), my lease 5 miles west of Watson (few deer (managing herd/population for 5 years), but some decent finally, hogs pass thru), a friends place I oversee on Mesquite creek about 5 miles south of Lampasas (decent population deer, some decent (I've managed since '97), hogs pass thru) and my own small place about 3 miles south of Oatmeal (few deer, hogs frequently pass thru).

There seems to be a growing number of hogs in northern & NE Burnet county but sporadic as they seem to travel, but there were pockets back in the '60s-70s in NW part of the county that had overpopulation issues with hogs that we used to help thin out.

I have seen deer in the more open & plains areas in North & NE Burnet county out in the middle of no place, not a clump of trees for a mile or more ... guess they got a whiff of a doe that they decided to pursue.

Hey PMK, I graduated in 80, so we've had the same teachers I'm sure. I hunt mostly now in NM. I mostly hunted in NW Burnet county, the Smith Ranch in particular. My grandfather was the foreman there for over 50 years. Most recently, my Dad and I hunted off park road 4, next to the castle. I have moved back here now after being gone for 31 years. I came out of retirement and work at Horseshoe Bay and help my parents as they are not in the best of health. One of the biggest bucks I've ever seen was on those plains you mention, in NW Lampasas, in the Lometa area. I hunted there several years and saw some huge ones killed, 2 of which that went over 170. If you should ever need a doe killed...lol. Have a couple of friends who live in Oatmeal as well.

I grew up in just north of lake victor. Family still lives there. I dont hunt there but we have lots of deer just all small and usually bucks get shot too early by people just filling tags. We have quite a few hogs and the occasional axis follow etc. It has been really dry the past few years around there so water and feed are a must. If you want big deer you are in the wrong place but if you want a fun place and see game it should be fun. Growing up I always joked it was the land of the 100 in whitetail.

I'm familiar with Lake Victor, most of my family (grandparents) was raised there and use to go to the reunion every year. Still have friends that live there.
