I just bought me a new toy and I'm needing some info for reloading. I need a place to start and then I can go from there. I have my dies on order and I already have the brass.

The hodgdon site is great, I get alot of stuff off of there, also the one caliber one book deals are pretty good. I have shot 180 gr siera sp's, 180gr barnes xbt's, 200 grain partitions, and hornady 220 round nose all with good results. The powder I use most with it is H4350, but H4831 works well for me too.

Thanks guys I'm still waiting on my dies to come in so I can get started. If you have a special load I would love to have a starting place. I been told the Weatherby 300 Mag is notorious for its poor shooting groups.

Mine shoots very well, under an inch at 100 yards with factory and handloads, and it is just a vanguard sporter.

Just curious here, but what type of groups are you trying to achieve with your rifle?

I have been shooting a 300 Weatherby Mark V for over 10 years and enjoy the work it does on game, so you remarks made me curious.

I think it is a comon misconception that big guns dont shoot good. This is because most, or alot of shooters dont have what it takes to sit on the punishing end of the gun for multiple practice shots at the range. I have only had mine for a little over a year and a half and have put over 400 rounds through it, and it shoots very well. Clean it try diff bullet weights, mine really likes 200-220's the best. If you change the scope and amo and it dont fix it then it aint the problem, it is either you or the gun.

I'm a 300 Weatherby fan, shot one for many years now. But i have a question for other 300 shooters. I see several shooting what i consider bullets on the heavy side, 180 and up and i have to ask why?

Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.

For me I dont like bullets that fragment on impact realy bad, or fragment at all. I find that heavier for caliber bullets generaly create a smaller exit wound, less blood shot and will make it through any bone I hit. I think the heavier bullet combined with a slightly reduced velocity due to its weight is a good combo. I do real good with mine and eat up to the bullet hole.

That is a good question Hwy_man.

I have made one shot kills on everything from elk down with 150 gr. Barnes "X" out of my Mark V 300 Weatherby, with out any problems.

I have also helped drag and gut a few that other shot at ranges in excess of 400 yards with 150 gr. bullets of various makes, out of 270's and 30-06's.

It is somewhat odd to me the useage of the heavier bullet weights, and most people on here are aware of my choices as far as calibers are concerned.

I am just glad to know I am not the only one that has had problems with a Mark v .300wby. 3rd scope who knows how many types of ammo handloads/factory and the gun won't group. It is at the gunsmith now. If you read the Wby site they all shoot sub MOA out of the box.

I've been shooting 180 gr Trophy Bonded Bearclaw bullets for a long time. They are tough. Over the years I've only recovered two bullets. One was a 300+ pound hog shot up the pooter and the bullet was in the rooter(under the skin, under his eye). The other was an elk in Colorado shot facing me in the center of the chest and the bullet was found under the hide at the back of the hindquarter.

I loaded some Nosler Partitions and didn't have real good luck, the bullets didn't exit and seemed to come apart at impact.

I would take it to a good gunsmith and get a trigger job, first. Truing the action would be my next step and then rebarrel it with a match grade barrel.
