I have been told by numerous land owners and outfitters that the TV shows get a management buck in return for the publicity that the ranch gets through the show. If they want a "trophy", then they have to pay for it. Most shows can't afford to pay for a trophy. Thats why you see most of the hunters "settle" for a management buck on the last day of the hunt.

That's the joy of watching Western hunts in premium units...those hunts can run a pretty penny just to get the tag.

Where's the confusion? A tv show filming in a hunting camp I was a part of would not bother me unless it affected my hunt in a negative way. Questions? Yeah, why was chit plagiarizing you? He knows excellent writing when he sees it.

I wish dstrong on here would chime in. He had the pigman and crew at his mexico lease. I would be curious to hear the outfitters thoughts on this.

I was on a mule deer/antelope hunt in Wyoming while a pro hunter was in camp videoing his hunt. The hunter was Allen Treadwell of Bass Pro, and he was really personable and enjoyed having him and his camera man in camp. It didn't appear that he received any preferential treatment on this particular hunt for being a pro hunter. While most of the hunters in camp, I think there were 12, that week had tags for a mule deer and antelope and were able to fill their tags with decent trophies, Allen never got a shot at a decent mule deer. He did take a couple nice antelope. So in my opinion a hunt where everyone has a very good chance of filling their tag it wouldn't bother me to have a pro hunter in camp hunting.
That being said I have hunted elk in the wilderness area of Idaho with an outfitter that brought in Smith & Wesson pro hunters, his sponsors, to film a hunt in a low percentage fair chase hunt for elk (usually 10-15 hunters in camp and 1 or 2 elk killed maybe) and they hunted with the outfitter himself and harvested the only bull. Two other times while hunting with this outfitter his coach from high school was there hunting, and was being guided by the outfitter, and he was fortunate to harvest a couple nice bulls. So to me as a paying customer it really depends on the outfit and the type of hunt you are booking. It's important to remember that fair chase outfitters make money off of bookings, not on killing, and once you book there are no guarantees that you will be in game, have a good guide or be given the outfitters best effort.

Someone else going with the outfitter himself is common. I have never gone with the same outfitter twice-and since the outfitter himself usually takes repeat customers I have never been guided by the outfitter himself. So far that has not been an issue as my guides have all been top notch.

Had a blast on the one hunt where a show was filming, but i was a goose hunt and not big game. I would have no issue sharing another hunt for any game with RD and Tom.

Id reschedule so I wouldn't make them look bad.... Seriously I would rather watch you rassle a big gar or shoot some trash fish out of the Navasota than 90% of the stuff on TV. In fact, your whole dang life could be a show- "Livin' The Dream With Navasot- Presented By Bucee's".

Well, its not always a management hunt. I know a few popular TV show hosts that have their sponsors(hunting ranches and outfitters) pay them a pretty good amount to advertise their business on the TV show. I have seen anywhere from $10K-$30K per year. But only the really big names in the TV show industry can get that kind of money.

I'd stick it out then complain if the hunt wasn't great.
Who knows they MIGHT work harder for you so they could do a short interview with you.

Not just a TV show I have found it is not good to mix groups period. Somone always feels like they are getting the short end or they dont get along.

I'd be concerned that all the outfitters attention would be on the tv show...they would certainly get pole position at every turn. This is true, at least in my experience. I've been on three expensive hunts where video was rolling. I'll pass in the future, thank you.
