Looking for opinions on an inexpensive home defense/tactical shotgun.

I got a stoeger 2500 tactical. It has eaten everything I've put through it and its a semi auto. Think it was $450 OTD.

There are complaints on the EXPRESS for various reasons.
Nothing that can't be fixed though.

I'll be the oddball-Mossberg 500. Easy to tear down for cleaning and any repairs, and has a good aftermarket following for upgrades.

Believe I have an old one then, I obtained it in 1995.

NEVER a failure. I starting hunting with a Super X 2 and found the 870 just sitting in the safe with nothing to do. A 3 shot tube and the barrel in the lathe cut to 18 1/2" later, and it lives in the house, at the ready.

Just what the others have said. Maverick 88. It is a Mossberg 500. The only difference is the 88 has a crossbolt safety, and the 500 has a tang safety. All the other parts are interchangable.

All of the previous comments are highly recommendable. I think there is something to be said about the keltec ksg. There's now way I would pay the $1500 for it, unless that was like coke and candy money, but a bull pup shotgun that holds 13 rds is pretty awesome. Just my thoughts. I can't say anything about their reliability.

I know alot of guys prefer their HD to be semi autos, and I can understand that, but I prefer a pump. I've had 2 semi auto shotguns in the past that had jamming problems. So just for my own personal piece of mind, I like my maverick nice probably shot it 500+ times without the slightest hiccup.

Of course that is only personal preference, and guys who have good autos they've never had a problem with wont have that fear. But that's just my 2 cents.

Yessir!!

I think we ought to have a contest here on THF to see who can build the lowest priced tactical or "truck" shotgun (that actually works as intended without hurting the shooter). We can call it the "100 Dollar $#itbox Shotty Build Off" or some such.

I am toying around the idea of a stoeger double defense. My ideas are for a tri-purpose truck/defense/survival gun.

I want to bore holes in stock and install shortlane chamber adapters in the holes. If purchased in 12g form and, you can get 20g, 22lr, 9mm, etc adapters and keep them in before mentioned holes that you bored in stock. Take them out of their storage location in stock and slip into chamber(s) and go. Essentially an all-in-one gun. Almost pulled the trigger on this until Biden suggested a double-gun and it kinda turned me off of it. I still think that it is a great idea, particularly if you lined then bored-holes in stock with nitrile to make sure everything fits snug.

On semis, I couldn't agree more. Had a 3000 that would jam, the charging handle would pop out, etc.

However, their doubles are legendary. Can you say Wells Fargo?

I agree, the Stoeger Coach is legendary. Legendary for being cheap, and having many issues. Do a google search for "stoeger coach problem". They have shell extraction failures, light primer strikes, no primer strikes, both triggers going off at once, no CS support, etc.

You get what you pay for.

Well dang, I'm usually on top of my research. My bad.

That's what was thinking, going with a pump. More reliable and the unmistakable sound of chambering a round.

I got a CZU 612 for $300. 20" barrel. only shot about 10 box thru it but have had no problems. I pick up a 26" dove hunting barrel for it. which is where I shot it

PS my cousin works for CZ but I am not tring to sale them [full disclosure :)] that is also how it got it before the shot show. I don't know if the full production models are like mine.

Just a pet peeve. Your home defense weapon should be cocked and locked. If I was to chamber a round right now with my hd shotty, I'd have a shell eject. Should be ready to roll all the time in my opinion. The first sound I want the person in shooting at to hear is a shotgun blast. Not give him time to draw a bead on me.

Do they make an 870 with a home defense barrel and a field barrel?

Yes, Sir. I spent a little more on the original shot gun. Picked up a bird barrel. About all the bird hunting I do is dove hunting. Serves well for that.

With the 870 you can pick up a bird barrel and waterfowl barrel. I have a CZ OU water fowl. Mostly for a yearly goose hunt.
