Anyone have any experience with spin tech feeders and a 50/50 mix of corn/protein. Any clogging problems?

I wouldn't put protein in a typical spin cast feeder if it were me unless you have a lamco style trough feeder that the actual spinner plate is concealed where most moisture cant get to it.

Worst thing have ever done was spin protein. My 12V feeder pulverized the pellets and stopped up a lot!

They eat the protein off the ground great at our place. I just need to know if the spintech, because of the shaft the spinner rides on will stop up

The quality of the pellet will make a difference on if it will work or not with the spintech spinner plate. The humidity will come into play also if you have a poor pellet manufacture quality. The last thing will be the length of time you feed each time the feeder goes off. The feed has to flow to keep from wanting to bridge up. The bridging up of the pellets/corn will be due to the moisture used in the pellets to manufacture them and still in the corn at harvest. The feed not flowing everyday will and clogging on the plate will cause the pellets/corn to sweat or condensate inside the top of the feeder under the lid. It then rains back down on your feed inside only to repeat all over again. As long as the feed is flowing out of the feeder each day you will be fine. I would not try to keep feed in the feeder longer than a 3-5 weeks depending on the humidity and pellet quality.

I've had hit and miss success on doing this the past 4 seasons or so. I completely agree with Ranch on all his noted points plus will add one or two more. Ventilation is "key". In a metal barreled feeder with airtight lid, that is a recipe for massive condensation/clogging. You have to have a lid top over the barrel only, no locking lids. Also, polyurethane feeders seem to do much better than metal barreled when throwing protein. Make sure the spout is large enough and spinner plate set accordingly to not allow pellets to lodge themselves sideways, etc. since they are cylindrically shaped. Finally it seems to work much better when throwing a combination of corn/protein as opposed to just corn. One or two seasons I saw a big uptick in deer activity when tossing corn/protein; the other two seasons not as much so hit and miss from that regard too.

Question for southtxranchman. I've been told that you can eliminate these problems by throwing out a corn soybean mix and that the soybeans have about the same protein content as other protein pellets. Comments?

I've been told that you can eliminate these problems by throwing out a corn soybean mix and that the soybeans have about the same protein content as other protein pellets. Comments? The corn/soybean mix I've been throwing recently has 16% protein, which is what the standard protein pellets have. However, throwing twice a day for 3 seconds on the ground doesn't compare to free-choice feeding from a tube or tray IMO. Besides the lower quantity of feed thrown vs. free choice, once the soybean is on the ground there's more competition for it with raccoons, squirrels, etc. I mainly throw it b/c they seem to like it and it does provide some level of protein nutrition over corn.

Soybean vs protein pellet.......
The biggest difference is going to be the fiber and trace mineral content that soybean doesn't offer.
Also know that if corn and soy are mixed and the soy is 16% your actual protien will only be roughly 8% per lb since its mixed

Any time...I stopped trying to spin protein out of a regular feeder ans switched to a lamco trough feeder...works perfect and it throws everything
