I love my 700s... but for 1/2 the price, the tang 77 is a no-brainer for me.

It really depends on the models you are comparing, year of production, your use, and acceptable accuracy tolerance. I have a 700 mountain that shoots rings around the three 77 ultralights I've owned, and two 77 compacts. There are way too many models to compare just 77 -vs- 700. I've had more out of the box accurate Rem 700's than 77's for sure.

Oh, but I do have one 77/ series that I just bought that is a tack driver.

I have owned multiple models of both brands and hands down prefer the Ruger; and I believe with Ruger you get more for your money.

Never had a Ruger let me down; and as for accuracy......

Both are push feed receivers, later & current Mk II Rugers with the 3 posiiton wing safety are CRF's,

Some early Tang'ers had Douglas barrels that are extremely accurate, Renm 700's have a lot of after market toys to play with...but generally shoot well from NIB.

Ruger 77's have a unique 45* angle receiver screw that pulls the reciver down into the recoil lug on every shot - that will need some easy cheap TLC to find the "sweet spot" , Rem 700's use a tradional 90* angle rreciver screw set up. Both guns should probably benefit from being 'glass bedded. & floating the barrel.

Ck me here but I believe I remember all Ruger 77's bolts are a one piece Handle and Bolt body milled out of bar stock, and the recievers are forged, can't say about the Rem 700's but they are easier & cheaper to produce & the bolt handle is WELDED onto the bolt body..and have been known to break off in some year models with more than an occasional report to that effect. Dunno about the current production's fix on the Welded bolt handle issue or history.

Ruger's "built in" double bridge scope mount system is stronger than any drilled and tapped scope mounts IMO, 2nd only to SAKO's which have a larger & longer gripping surface.

Rem barrels use an electically heated "hot button" reamer to cut the lands and grooves, and Ruger using a hammer forged reamer ...Fords & Chevy's argument, but Rem 700's are supposed to be decent to good to occasioanly excellent NIB shooters especailly with barrels that are within the first 50+ off a new cutter, while early Rugers were not always as accurate until tuned a touch...unless the reciever is a reddish plum color and several of mine were nigh onto impossible to make them shoot sub moa, but more than acceptable for minute of deer.

Both Ruger & Rem 700's have had a history of trigger issues...Ruger recalled their problem SR's, re desgned the trigger, and fixed all the recalled pieces...Remington I understand is still usuing the same designs - see plethora of after market triggers for a better trigger choice.

As far as the OP's QUESTION...I bought Ruger 77's first when I started buying my own guns as the VERY BEST VALUE on the market at the time, Had some great ones , had a couple I was not proud of, but of the 2 Rem 700 Samples I owned, I dumped them both times after a single season, for different reasons o each gun and never looked back. After I got into the Gun Industry, 1st as a Distributor's Rep & as a Factory Rep I either bought or shot nothing but Winchester Model 70's or SAKO's...and have added only CZ to that preference in the last 25 years.
Cheers
Ron

mine will do pretty close to that with 130 grain hornady customs after getting the action and barrel bedded and floated and the trigger brought down to a reasonable weight.

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Nothing wrong with a Ruger but in the sport of shooting don't let a couple of hundred dollars influence you. You will blow through that much in no time. Get the rifle you want and you will never second guess your decision. Lot more add ons for a Remmy.

For $320 it isn't even a tough decision. I have a Ruger in 257 Bob that I taught both kids to hunt with. Ruger makes a great gun, go buy it!

"For $320 it isn't even a tough decision..."

I'd buy it for that price if the outside was clean and the barrel was rusted shut or would not hold a 2' group simply to use as a donor. I'll find what I want someday, most likely a wore out 77Mk II or CRF M70 and build a po' boys custom semi bull barrel 26" 6.5 x'06 or a light 'er weight than my h a'd CZ in a carbine length 9.3x62 ... or some other funsie oddball caliber that uses a standard non magnum reciever ummm like a 375 Scovill or 338'06 AI. Plenty of options when you start ahead of the game with an inexpensive donor in good shape...or just fix any issues it might have 'cause it can be fixed cheaply most likely.
