What gear is required? A friend wants to start duck hunting and I'm trying to give him a down and dirty listing of what's needed. Just the bare basic stuff, not all the nice to have stuff. Suggestions are appreciated.

Why the hell should I have to press 1 for English!!??

For just the bare basics tell him to get
5mm neoprene waders
shotgun, steel shot
a dozen cheap decoys
5 in 1 whistle

Make sure and include the costs of license. That always seems to cost more than you think it would.

I would go 3mm, breathable even better. Also need camo jacket and camo cap.

i'd have to add... tell him to buy decent stuff... no reason in going back to buy better stuff later, just buy decent stuff now... such as it was mentioned 5mm neoprene waders. there are rubber, canvas, and 3.5mm ones that can do the job effectively, but it is better to spend the extra money on decent ones.

Things I wouldn't skimp on would be waders, Shotgun, and location. as for decoys and duck call... i'd also suggest not getting bottom of the barrel stuff, but if you do a little research you can get decent equipment at good prices.

Finding a buddy who hunts already would alleviate some of these costs a bit.

A black hoodie and barrel stickers for his gun, also white sunglasses, oh and start growing his beard now. Seemed to be a common thing at the boats ramps last season anyway.

Camo jacket is not bare bones necessity. You can get by with a dark color sweater or hoodie. Cap is a plus, then you can just keep your head down instead of painting your face. Its not a bare bones necessity though.

Dont forget to get 5 or 6 mojo mallards for those timber redheads.

Decoys, gun, location, steel shot, license, and neutral colored clothing. I got my limit several times this year as a newbie without a call, without a beard, without face paint, and not always in earth colors.
