So I'm interested in going on a Sea Duck Hunt. Looking for advice as I have no experience hunting ducks out of state. We are think about Washington but not sure if this is the best area or not. Looking for a place that has the most variety in species with Harlequins high on the list and would love to take a King Eider also. I know Alaska is probably the best choice but I'm afraid the cost will scare most of my hutting buddies away. Where have you guys been and what outfitters do you recommend? Also give me an idea on cost. Pics would be awesome. Thanks guys
Travis

Hi Travis, My buddies and I go up to Cape Cod every year to gun sea ducks and have a great time with Captain Ruben Perez of East Coast Guide Service. He's been in the game for several years, the man knows duck hunting. Safe, fun, and most of all he produces fantastic hunts! Take a look at his webpage www.seaduckhunt.com and you can see a ton of photos with results. He is regarded by many the best at the sedukin game, bar none! The hunts are extremely reasonable, compared to what the cost is for gunning Alaska. I've been there too, highly advise it. Just the experience as a whole, but yes, you'll freeze your but off. If I had to choose one, I'd go with Capt. Perez in Cape Cod. He has variety, and a ton of action. Don't know how to post photos, but take a look at his website. If you have facebook I think this works: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.204554202950582.51686.165943910144945&type=1I had talked with Capt. Smith, nice guy. We decided to pass on being dropped off on jetties, or taking part in the large boat parties he hunts. We like a personal hunt. But different folks different strokes. They all charge around the same $$ , so that's not much of an issue. Anyhow, it's a hoot, you and your friend will love it. All I say, is a must for duck hunting. Enjoy, Mike

He wants harlequin ducks. You can't shoot them in Atlantic flyway.

Do both. They are both unique experiences but nothing compares to Ak. Seldovia Ak is my favorite place to hunt in the world. Take an extra half day to check out homer. Go to the salty dog and the shipyard. Very likely to get Togo on the time bandit or one of the other crab boats. Pick which species are your targeted species and go there furst. Having hunted about 10 locations on both east and Ak you will see a lot more birds in Ak. We shot season limits on Harlis, all three scoters, barrows and common goldeneyes, oldsquaws, Aleutian geese, and a few others. Harlis, scoters, and barrows plus some fresh cod and halibut for dinner. Morning shoot by myself-dad was sick. From a floating blind Fatheads! Having drinks with the time bandit crew at the otter bar in homer.

I've also been told that big timber lodge on raspberry island is a good place to go. I've hunted that area with a friend that lives there a couple times. I will have to find some east coast pics too. Shooting big far eiders in the face does not suck either.

Alaska and Washington state only place with regulated season for Harlequin
That's correct, but I think you can only shoot one ! That's a bunch of $$ for just one bird if you take into account the guides there only want o take you for three days. What if the one harlie you shoot is all shot up? Or not nicely feathered? Harlequins are not scarce in Mass. Capt. Perez told us that he has some spots that are loaded with the little blue ducks, and clients have to be careful with ID before pulling the trigger. Guess they are a no no for several years in the Atlantic flyway. When we hunted with East Coast Guide Service in Cape Cod, the gunners the day before had shot a really nice King! We saw another on our last day. Seems funny that I paid all that $ for one in AK, and here they were LOL M.

Same money and you get 4 I did the same thing on kings at St. Paul and then killed one self guided on the east coast the next yr.

If in homer early goto the harbor. That's between red crab and opie season. Boats will be in. Ask them for a tour. Every boat captain I've been around is cool. Been on Rollo, time bandit, and bsed with hansons from northwestern. Take pics. And get the your. Wheelhouse, engine room , etc. for me was big hi-light of the trips.

Don't worry the weather doesn't get too bad..... Take a couple hrs and walk around. You can walk all of Seldovia in 30 min. Walk to Seldovia beach. Great habitat/ocean treasure for mounts.
