Thought my fellow BBQ fans would find this interesting. Some surprises on the list and some surprises left off the list.

I don't know how Bartley's in Grapevine made that list.

I passed by Meshack's yesterday around lunch time and there were 30+ people in line.

I've said this before but Franklin's is the best I've ever had.

I love the original cousins, but the one on Bryant Irvin, not so much.

You guys seriously put any stock in what a bunch of booty bangers in Austin think of BBQ?

You guys are sad.

Have not seen it yet, but the food critics are like the movie critics, usually don't have a clue!

I remember reading how Texas Monthly now has a guy on staff, not a liberal Yankee writer, but a guy that loved BBQ so much he quit his job to write about nothing but BBQ.

Yeah, Texas Monthly recently hired Daniel Vaughn as their barbecue editor. Who knew there was such a job? That would without a doubt be my dream job. Vaughn is a blogger and knows his barbecue. I have followed his blog for a couple of years and he is usually right on the money. I just picked up his book that came out this month. It is called The Prophets of Smoked Meats. Here is a link to his blog.

Bartley's BBQ in Grapevine? They got to be kidding.

The Feed Store BBQ in Southlake is 10 times better.

The fact that Stanleys, in Tyler was on there should be a clue to how way off base they are. I can think of 20 other BBQ joints in Texas that blow Stanleys doors off.

I ate at Stanley's yesterday and had to wait in a line that extended well out the door. The Brother-in-Law with a side of pork ribs was excellent as usual.

Texas Monthly gave Stanley's a rating of 4.5 (out of 5). That would indeed place it around #20 among the top 50 joints in the state.

So Chuck's rating of #20 seems about right, but I doubt the doors have been blown off. Just goes to show how BBQ appreciation is such an individual affair....

Should have said 20 other places not even on the list. I'm sorry you don't get out of town much and have a chance to experience good BBQ, because as sadly as I admit it there ain't none in Tyler, Tx.

Actually, 2 of my daughters live in Austin, so when I drive down US79 to see them, I make it a point to stop in Taylor for some of Louie Mueller's BBQ, always ranked among the best in Texas.

I believe that Mueller's cooks the best brisket I've ever eaten. But I think Stanley's in Tyler makes better baby back ribs, day in and day out. And I'm a big fan of Stanley's Bro-in-Law sandwich.

Gotta try Bob's BBQ in Henderson, which also made the top 50. I'm surprised that Baby J's in Palestine didn't make the list, nor Smitty's in Lockhart. Just shows that tastes in food vary....

I was shocked that the Salt Lick in Driftwood didn't make it...

Some good ones on the list, a fwe I don't care for, and some I've never heard of.

Saltlick is good, but not great. I think the atmosphere is what causes most to fall in love with it.

Yep gotta agree with Chuck on this topic. Heck I've tried quite a few places over the years they've reccomended and I can say more times than not I was not impressed!

BBQ is just like any other type of food.........everyone's tastes vary......what one man thinks is good Q, the other may think is terrible. That's why I will never take anyone's advice from here,or a magazine about food........I'll try it out for myself and be the judge!!

If I can't taste woodsmoke on my bbq I don't consider it bbq.I get meat that was cooked on a gas grill and called bbq. They want you to smear sauce on it to give taste.

Yeah, that list is pitiful. In Lockhart, they chose Black's and Kreutz. Which means that they chose Black's over Smitty's and over Chisolm Trail.

In San Marcos, they chose Hays Co. BBQ. It's not bad but it's approximately on par with Black's. Milt's in Kyle is better. As is The Salt Lick. I will say that the Salt Lick has slid backward in recent years. Since the Austin yuppy crowd discovered it, it's gone down hill. I think the volume of people through there has caused quality to slide. It was much better 15 years ago.
