This little guy has made the goldfish pond next to my back porch his new home. He is only about 8-10 inches long. I'm thinking this guy is harmless, but not sure? Either way the wife says it has to go.

Since you're this close, you can tell it's not venomous from the pupils. Vipers have elliptical pupils. This guy has round pupils. If you can catch him maybe you could relocate him.

I don't know how harmless he is to the gold fish. I mean that, I really don't know.

They aren't poisonous but they are agressive.

He's going to love the goldfish. My brother works at a fish farm and they have a huge problem with snakes eating the fish. One 24" snake he killed had 4 fish in his belly.

He'd be a lot less harmless with his head cut off :P
Sorry.. I do not differentiate between harmless and not, with the one exception of the snakes that kill other snakes.
Easy way to tell whether it is harmless...
Take the dead body to the vet and ask them, "was this guy harmless?"
heh ]
Hunting is easy..it's getting permission from your wife that is tough.

Durn things will bite, but probably won't hurt you!
They can sure make you hurt yourself when they unexpectedly show up!

Put on some gloves and catch him. Take him to a drain ditch somewhere and let him go. Its a banded water snake. He wants your goldfish!!! He can bite, make you mess your pants, but not poisonous. He will eat your goldfish. I used to catch these all the time when I was young. They usually don't bite but every once in a while, they will.

Yep, just a broad banded water snake, it'll play hell on the goldfish.

As others have said, that little guy is a banded water snake.
Either relocate him, or use 1/2" wide electricians tape to tape a 2/0 hook to it about an inch behind the head and cast it out in the best bass water you can find.

He might be harmless, but if my wife sees him, it will be a disaster, her and snakes are a major problem. Even dead ones are a problem.

"Sneaky snake" was a tough sucker to catch. That little snake can move and with all the rocks around the pond he had had lots of places to hide. Finally caught him going for a swim and got em. He was relocated to a drainage pond in Frisco a safe distance from any residential area. Sorry about no updated pics but the wife wanted no part of taking pics of me capturing or holding the snake and the camera on my crapberry died.
