Hi. I'm up near Canadian in the panhandle and have flushed a couple groups of birds the past few mornings while out running. The light has been low and I only see them briefly in flight so I haven't got a good look but they look bigger than quail to me and when they fly they make a sort of a cluck, cluck, cluck noise. Really hard to explain the sound through the computer but I have never heard one before. They'll fly about 30 yards before landing. I know this is vague but any ideas?

That sounds like a pheasant. Not a lot, but a few wild ringneck pheasants have been seen all along the Canadian river for the last 40 or 50 years.
I have a friend that lives about 14 miles south of Canadian, Texas and he tells me that when he drive near the feed lot that he always see a few good looking wild pheasants hanging around there.

Might be. I need to get out there and see if I can find them on the ground and get a good look.

No more than I know about pheasant, I can't imagine them flushing and flying no more than 30 yds. Even the pen raised ones I've seen, once flushed and airborne, are gone.

Have to say I have never seen a pheasant land less than 100 yds after flushed. It may be a couple of lost prairie chickens.

Look on the link below, wild pheasant sounds. Click on "Male Flight Call" to see if that sound match what you heard. Also check out the Male crowing call, they crow in the morning and evening in spring and early summer. http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Ring-necked_Pheasant/sounds

I'm pretty positive it's a lesser prairie chicken. If you listen to the sound about 3/4 of the way through after the "warble" or whatever there is a quick succession of wa, wa, wa, WA, wa, wa, wa. or something like that. That is what I heard. Plus they had short tails in flight so I didn't think it was a pheasant. Link http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Lesser_Prairie-Chicken/sounds

Without a doubt these are Lesser Prairie Chicken and you described the sound very well, cluck, cluck, cluck in rapid fire order. Your probably jogging by a Lek (breeding area ). Chickens usually will fly at least a half mile before they alight except when on the lek . You must be jogging east of Glazier. There is a lek about four miles east from Glazier that has been there for ever, used every year. They like the short grass country usually on a small knoll. The males boom (call ) from this location which the females fly into and the courtship begins. Its pretty interesting to sit and watch. Take some pictures not everyone has seen this activity, in fact very few.

That is crazy because I'm exactly 4 miles east of Glazier. Thanks for the info! I'll get out there this afternoon and see if I can find them.

Go early in the morning ( I mean early, first crack of dawn they'll be there ) Thats all private ground, so be mindful of that. They won't be there in the evening. The last time I was there about 3 years ago there were only three using it, but it was earlier in the year than now. There used to be hundreds when I was kid. Canadian chamber has tours to view the Booming grounds, sign up and go, it's worth your time.

Was out this morning and heard them calling just as clear as my link up there. Awesome sound. I started easing through the brush. Never saw them on the ground but got within 15 yards and at least 20 of them busted up out of no where. It was intense! Wish my dog was with me.
Also saw one lone quail.

That's good news. Twenty birds equals about sixty new birds this summer. They're great dog trainers around the first of August. Look for them under the shinnery motts where the cattle have rubbed the lower limbs, they get under there for shade and can get a little breeze. You can get point after point as they won't fly but maybe a hundred yards and they stink loud. Really break a dog from cat walking by getting 'em steady and won't hurt their quail hunting. The dry climate will make a dog learn use its nose. Oh yeah , get permission first. Did you get any pictures???

No I didn't unfortunately. All I have is my cell and at 6 am the light is way too low for that. Plus they are quick and I only see them in the air.

At one time there were 13 Pro trainers using the Arnett, Oklahoma and Packsaddle area for summer training camps. I think there is one or two trainers still around. That area and Hemphill and Lipscomb counties in Texas was ideal habitat for the bird. Pass shooting a chicken coming overhead is no easy feat as they fly highline wire high and around 90 MPH but work well with a pointing dog on a walk up hunt.

They were taken around Plains which is on the state line West of Lubbock. I have killed 8 or 10 I have another male and female at my home. Some where killed over dogs and some where killed pass shooting. They are amazing birds. I killed these in 2003 and we saw several hundred on the place I hunt. I have also been on leks in the Spring with 50-60 males booming.

The last time I saw one I was dove hunting. It was flying back and forth from a fence line to low ground, repeatedly.
The next day, I didn't see it once. Curious, I hop on the SxS and go take a look. Nothing there but the feathers a yote wouldn't swallow. One less chicken.

Mark never got a chance to hunt them in Nebraska... they are a blast from what I have heard. Not bad eating?
