Old hat, because it is a movie, but the book is exceptional and I've read it several times, and I keep it on the "pot" for reading material. "All the Pretty Horses" by Cormac McCarthy.
Two forties or fifties era young cowboys with seemingly nothing to lose go to Mexico to try and recapture the adventure and lifestyle of the old west. They get far more than they bargained for. WOW! Another McCarthy fan. I guess that makes, what, a dozen of us in all of the gun-totin' state of Texas? May I suggest two favorites? Suttree Child of God. Suttree is my favorite Cormac McCarthy work, but Child of God is endearing in a perverted gothic sort of way. Both novels predate Texas and are set in eastern Tennessee, back in McCarthy's Knoxville days. Both are good to read on a stormy winter night when the senses are turned inwards upon themselves. Definately NOT everyone's cup of tea, but amazingly crafted modern fiction IMO. Add me to the list of Cormac McCarthy fans. He is by far my favorite living author. I have read every one of his books, but Blood Meridian is my favorite McCarthy novel. In fact, Blood Meridian is my favorite book of all time. I think it is a must read for any fan of the Western genre.

But it is so utterly violent in a gnostic way that I always feel uneasy while reading it. And the Judge is so perverted and grandiose that I wonder if McCarthy uses him to represent the Devil, or just a humanized face of War and Violence in general. I hunted for 21 years on a ranch that abutts Fort Griffin. Every time I drove through the restored "Flats", I always recalled the Kid's sodomized murder in the outhouse and the Judge's naked dancing in the saloon where the bear was just killed. A strange but powerful book, for sure. I keep waiting for someone like Tommy Lee Jones or Billy Bob Thornton to try and make a movie from it.....

Blood Meridian will leave an impression on you for sure. It is not for the faint of heart, but few of McCarthy's novels are. I agree that Suttree is underrated as well. Child of God was less violent, but left me with a sick feeling after reading it.

Cormac McCarthy writes very dark novels. I suspect that he is one messed up individual. If he's thinking what he's writing, he'll join Mindy pretty soon.
I just finished Two Years before the Mast. Written in 1837, I think. Very interesting. Then read Milo Afong's USMC sniper book. very interesting, but not that very intesting. Now reading Ann Rice's latest book. Pretty good so far. Next on rotation is Roll Me Over, a book by a combat infantryman in WWII. Then probably Inquisitor's Key by Jefferson Bass.
Don't read too much by Cormac McCarthy or you'll need a shrink and medication. You want a dark novel that's written far better, then read Cold Mountain. You won't forget that one for a while. It stays in your head.

I loved Cold Mountain, the book anyway. The movie was miscast.....the producer clearly hadn't read the book when he decided to have Jude Law play Inman, a guy who the author described as being a "ruffian and a lout". Pretty boy Law just didn't fill the bill. I see Russell Crowe in the role of Inman.
Nicole Kidman wasn't much better either.....maybe Renee Zellweger instead.
This is why I generally like books better than movies, perhaps?

I will second on the "Abridged" version of Atlas Shrugged. It's the only time I have ever read(listened to) an abridged version of anything, but I was happy I did. I don't agree with Ayn Rand's whole philosophy, but she was scary accurate on her prediction of what is happening in this country today.

I have been listening to the unabridged version of Atlas Shrugged. I listened to the abridged too. If you have the time the unabridged is better. 50 CD's though...
Oh and lots of school books.... ick.

currently "the talent code" by daniel coyle, very interesting and very malcolm gladwell-like, if you like his stuff.
If I send my neighbors a text and ask them to give me feedback on my lawn and plant rye into a giant dong pattern, I'm probably going to get some less than positive feedback. Same goes here.

Surely you aren't suggesting the members of this forum know how to read, are you? Don't you know that we're a group of illiterate savages with bones through our noses, eagerly awaiting the enlightenment dispensed by our intellectual superiors in New York and Seattle? This illiterate savage is working on Volume 2 of Democracy in America. My previous book was, as you might expect, Volume 1 of Democracy in America. The one before that was Capital by Marx.
