Need a pommapugapoopit retriever. He will bay hogs, fetch birds, sit in your' lap next to the fire, and they don't shed hair.

You could you pretty much use any of the well bred versatile breeds, my dogs will track and chase a hog, they will attempt to bay him, but I'm not eager to let my dogs loose on a hog, I've got too much work in them to risk injury or worse. In Europe they use Deutsch-Drahthaar, Shorthairs, Pudelpointers, etc.

It's all in the training.

ya, the labs Ive hunted with wont catch, but they made really good strike dogs...I'm sure if we wouldve tried, they wouldve made good bird dogs too.

I have a buddy who trained a male german shorthair (100lb +-) to bay hogs and was able to maintain his ability to point quail. It sounded odd at first, but I saw him work and he did great.

Boxers are very veritile they have a great nose, theyre tight skinned, have huge balls when it comes to other large animals, and will hunt and retrieve. I have seen a couple boxers with a nice natural point niether were styled on theyre point but i imagine it would be possible to do so.

Good luck with that! I've had many pointers and shorthairs that would fight with a hog but they quickly learned that's not what they're after. I don't like holding biting dogs while my huntin partners are shooting.

you cant have one not both ,

hog dogs wont make bird dogs an hog dogs ,

if you have bird dogs you only want him messing with birds
if you have a hog dog you only want him messing with hogs not chaseing hog then next thing you know chaseing a bird

breed is the least important thing you need to worry about , find you a good dog that is striking hogs an doing it by him/her self an buy it if the owner will sell it
its gonna cost to get a good one ,
then worry about catch dog after that ,
you can get away with one catch dog an one strike dog ,

I've have seen one show up at Chaparral WMA just as I was leaving. His owner claimed he was still a pup, and I'll swear he looked as big as a shetland pony.

He obviously wasn't THAT big, But...I looked it up when I got home and giantism is not unheardof in the breed. (at least at that time...maybe breeders have bred that out by now)

Now that was more than 15 years ago, and I haven't seen one like him since. But there are some big ole' shorthairs around.

You can't have both. Labs belong in a duck blind. Lacy belong on your couch or on a blood trail.
Find you a cur dog from a hunting line. Don't worry about papers. If you doing it on a budget , don't buy any dogs. It is expensive to take care of multiple dogs. I spend 220-260 a month on feed. That doesn't include wormer, vet supply or vet bills when emergency care is needed. If you need a contact for a good line of dogs let me know. I havea nnice young male that might be looking for a new home. I am real particular on my dogs. I just don't like him.
Number one , just take care of your dogs. Most hog hunters do not and it makes the rest of is look like trash. Feed good food and worm them.

First, a 100lb shorthair would have a coronary trying to hunt upland birds in Texas!! 90% of the wild bird GSPs in Texas are field trial bred and are never nearly that big.

However, if you could combine a Catahoula/Cur/GSP you would end up with a somewhat fur sharp dog that didn't point.

I would suggest finding a Greif line GSP that is still fur sharp. Most linebred Greif dogs still have that fur sharpness. But, to expect them to be even close to a Catahoula or Cur as a chase dog, ain't gonna happen.

I'm sure those who use dogs to hunt hogs more than I do will correct me, but if you are only gonna own 1 or 2 dogs and hog hunt, I would suggest not even trying. The teamwork needed can't happen by throwing a dog or two in with a team of dogs used to hunting with each other.

I'd tell you to get the pointing dog you like, well bred, field trial stock and go try to find the 7 total wild quail still left in Texas. Or, better yet, buy a Florida strain cur and have a tremendous house pet and family member.

I've owned around 50 shorthairs, one catahoula, and now one catahoula/cur. I wouldn't trade this cat/cur for anything!!

You can easily hunt two dogs. Just shoot over them.

You can train a dog to do just about anything. But , you can't teach a dog to hunt.

Good at many jobs , master of none.

Just a few comments worth sharing.

getcha some yellers curs, cats, lacys, mt curs or a hound or hound cross, and like swamp said, leave the birds to bird dogs, hog to hog dogs. a good old line of curs will work cattle and or hogs, but do your homework on the line and the owner of the line. there are guys trying to pass culls off as finished dogs.
