sunflowers....lots of it....a shredder, disc, seeder, drag....or shredder and seed drill is ideal....I still like running a disc infront of a drill either way.... you will need to plant at the right time acording to your area to get the right seed in september.

Plant dove weed [crowton] nothing eats it We have croton that grows naturally on our property. The cows dont eat it but they sure like to walk through it and lay down in/around it. I was thinking maybe the smell keeps flys off them? I dont know. Maybe they just like the fuzzies rubbing their bellies

Mid April I planted my sunflowers because if you wait till May 10 that's the latest you can go before they develop enough seed for the dove to consume. Milo works well and is easy to grow.

We plant ours late June- early July. the season starts later in South zone so the plants will have time to mature. Turner or Triumph seed. Usually runs about $100 a bag. This seed is treated and drought/disease tolerant. Not your regular wild game bird seed mix that you find at the feed store. We buy ours from a seed rep. The thicker you plant them the smaller the heads will be. I plant mine thick to produce more plants with smaller heads, this will allow you some time to still have seed if they are mature a week or two before the season. The birds will wipe out a field in a week or two (at least the do where I hunt) so you want to compensate for that. We plant the borders of our sunflower fields in either milo, sudan, or millet. This gives you a variety. Also, our milo fields (50-300 acres each) will be bailed for hay, usually a week before the season. When bailing milo you knock off all the seed from the heads and the rest is put in the bailer. This is PERFECTLY LEGAL. Cows will mess with milo but they don't eat the sunflowers. If you can fence the plots off that would help. If you are planning on hunting more that opening weekend I would plant 20-30 acres. This will give you plenty of food for throughout the season. Bring plenty of shells and get ready for some Mexico like dove hunting because it gets fast and furious

Guys im looking to plant something about 3-4 acres and I know it's late but just bought property.. I have about 600 acres around me in sunflower and corn so I was thinking about doing milo to change it up. Just trying to get the birds over my little piece of property! I do have a small pond and was just wanting a small plot for dove and deer etc..
I don't have cows but have a major hog problem!!

It will be easy to compete with the corn and milo. If you plant sunflowers that will attract more birds than the corn and milo. Just make sure you do everything right and you will have birds.
