Is there a rule of thumb to determine how much the price of a gently used gun drops compared to when it was new and unfired? How about typical popular accessories that you add to the gun? I suppose they should drop even more than the gun itself.
My question concerns: -Only very popular guns (Ruger 10/22, Glock, etc..) -Only on a normal market (so this excludes what happened a few month ago, when Ruger 10/22 was sold for $500)
So is there a rule of thumb to calculate the price drop? Like -15% or something like that on the gun and it's accessories?

In my experience, gently used guns should sell for pretty much the same as new guns. I don't think anyone really cares if the gun has 50 rounds through it and 0 scratches; it's not like a car where you instantly lose a ton of value when you drive it off the lot.
Accessories on the other hand are different. The problem with selling a gun with accessories is that very few people will want the exact setup you are selling; most people prefer to set up their guns how they like them. I'd say that if you can, sell the accessories separately.

I agree with outlaw the old rule of thumb was 80%. I will also agree with him on accessories, with the exception of scope rings and mounts, good quality rings and mounts add to the package.
for every stereotype there's a prototype don't be the prototype

I know at least of one accessory that almost doesn't lose its value. Can you guess?..........
......The Harris 6-9 BRSM bipod….

I use the Gun Values "blue book" as a guide. It doesn't keep up with a fast moving market and it doesn't consider regional differences but it's a good rule of thumb. Before there were so many unlicensed "dealers" supplementing their income buying/selling guns, the book was the accepted barometer. Now most guys want retail price for a used gun. If I'm going to pay retail, I'm going to buy new. I do not buy guns with the intention of selling them for a profit. But, if I buy a used gun I'm not paying any more for it than I can sell it for if I need the money later. Accessories? You can take them all off for all I care. The absolute worst is a guy with 8 magazines for his pistol. All I need is 2 so I'm not interested in paying extra for stuff I don't want. Just my
Practice doesn’t make perfect. Practice makes permanent.

Accessories are much more subjective. UTG stuff on a gun will lower the price to me. Some rails will increase it. Personally, I'd take all the added stuff on and sell off individually, at least with AR's.

Warranty could technically apply to original owner only with some brands. What's a warranty worth to you?

My experience has been the gently used is worth about 85-90% of new, but if you want to sell mark it for 75-80% new. The guns value might be worth 85-90% and occasionally you might find that one person out there looking for that exact setup or gun, but you increase your market if you make the deal a little bit better.

All of that is out the window right now and heres why: I bought a NEW glock last year for under 500 bucks.. today the same gun USED is 650-700 bucks... Also if you bought a colt 6920 for 2500 during the craze, went out and put a few dings and ran some rounds through it dont expect me to pay 2K for it when I can go down to WalMart and pick one up in the $1100 range. You gotta be under that price. The Books are good... but they are outdated as soon as they are printed. Go to Gunbroker and search your firearm... Add a few to your watch list at certain price points... Some sell within hours listed too low... some set and are relisted too high... You used to be able to search for ONLY sold firearms.. but I dont think that feature is there anymore... (or if it is I dont remember how to do it) Either way Gun Broker is the easiest answer... See what others are SELLING for... NOT what they are ASKING (as those are two different things) BTW I will go 950 for a used colt 6920 with magpul furniture shipped to my front door.. not a penny higher, and Im not sending you my personal information, using an ffl, or filling out useless and un needed paper work. I send you money and return shipping address you send me gun... done deal

It's still there. You have to be logged in. Click Advanced next to the search bar at the top of the page. Then click completed listing. Run your search. Most of the listings will not have sold. Look at the ones that did for a current market value.

Scarcity may also play a role in used prices. Like new guns that are extremely hard to find will sometimes sell for as much or more than a new one, if the new one has a long waiting list.
Silver spurs and gold tequila keep me hanging on. Pretty girls and old cantinas give me shelter from the storm.

It also depends on local or national level, I found gunbroker can be expense on items that may not be readily available to someone elses neck of the woods, but for the most part it gives a good ball park. Whatever price Im looking for I find the cheapest "buy it now" price, its more straight forward for new guns but still close for the "LNIB" On a side note, you would not believe how many bidders get into a frenzy and bid an auction up way higher than other "buy it now" prices... Crazy
