I want to replace the radiator in a Jeep I just acquired. The most economical route is going with an aluminum 3 core. Doing some research on the net, I have seen everything from horror stories to people swearing by them.

Galvanic Corrosion seems to be the biggest issue reported. Some folks says it is because of the mounting and you need to rubber mount them or ground them. Others say it is the coolant itself and you need a cap with an anode.

Is this really a problem, do any of you guys have any experience with them. What kind of hoops do you have to jump through if this truly is an issue.

Tempted to just buy one, mount it and roll the dice.

Most of the vehicles on the road have aluminum radiators. Clean engine grounds and a good extended life antifreeze are all you should need.

as posted above, very few copper/brass
radiators any more. flush twice yearly
(start of summer/winter) with tap water
and replace coolant/water with recommended
replacement coolant/antifreeze and distilled
water at correct ratio.

Not exactly the responses I was looking for as most engines today were designed to be used with aluminum radiators.

Since my jeep is 36 years old it was not, just heard some horror stories about old jeeps and aluminum radiators and galvanic corrosion and was hoping to hear if any one on here if anyone was running aluminum radiators in older jeeps.

I run aluminum radiators on my '85 K20 burb (4 row), and one on my '71 C10 (3 row). Never had a second of trouble out of either one, and they are just installed like any other radiator would be.

Both are cheap ebay all-welded versions w/built in trans coolers. Both cool extremely well. I would not hesitate to use another, but the only thing I have left is the Xterra, and it already has an aluminum radiator. Oh wait, I wonder if they make one for an 8N tractor????

Cant see the age making any difference at all, the motor is made of the same materials as many still are and the coolant will be similar if not the same also. If you don't mount it in rubber it will likely rub a hole on anything it contacts aft a while.

Thanks, as an electrical engineer Galvanic Corrosion is always a concern when dissimilar metals are concerned. I was initially concerned about this being steel frame that this could occur in the mounting holes radiator using carbon steel bolts. I did some research and there was a lot of talk about having to ground the radiator and using a radiator cap with an anode as well. The reason for this is that metals from the cast iron engine can be carried into the radiator and galvanic corrosion could happen that way. Since a lot of engines now are made from aluminum this is not a big issue on newer vehicles.

I had a feeling I was reading too much into it, I am just going to rubber mount it and run with it.

Thanks for the offer, but your a bit short on your offer. And the radiator is in, so far so good. Now to upgrade the Carter YF to a MC2100.
