i going to put some thing up around my feeder to keep the hogs out how big will it need to be and what would yall use i thought maybe 30 foot.

Hog panels and tpost, about 6 panels, cut in half for easy use, enough tposts to get it done.

how big is 6 panels the reason i ask is because i have a uncle who has chain link but i dont know if he has enough

If there is not any livestock on the place hog panels will be fine. You can get them usually in 16 foot lengths and at some Tractor Supply stores in 20 foot lengths.

I would suggest a minimum of 8 panels, more if you can afford it. A pen that is too samll will only end up with either the dominant buck or doe in it and the rest will show up but be long gone after just a few minutes.

If you use chain link it is going to have to be very tight. JMO Good luck.

I have a bunch of chain link, but never thought about using it for a feeder pen.

I put a feeder pen in place for the sole purpose of keeping out the hogs. I used 8 panels as it was all I could afford, and made a nice circle with 1 post on each side and 1 in the middle. I have other pens to keep out the cattle, but the hogs get in when I put barbed wire. My experience is that they will root under it and keep working on it until they have a hole big enough to get themselves inside the fence.

Sorry I don't have pics, but I can now throw acorns and mineral blocks in the pen with no worries of hogs eating them in one night.

If you use chain link you have to secure the bottom,and get the fence real tight. If not the hogs will go under the fence.

Helo, if I'm not mistaken hog panels are usually 34" high.

If they want in bad enough they can climb over hog panels. Usually they only do it a few times, then I guess they decide its not worth the effort.

Just make sure it is plenty big, deer do not like the small pens.....

I have built pens around three of my feeders. I built each pen with eight hog panels (34" high)--that makes each one about 40' in diameter. My ranch is covered up in hogs but for the year I've had the pens in place they haven't gotten through, over or under the panels. I also run cattle and haven't had them step over the panels, though I've heard stories of them doing so. I suppose chain link might work, but wouldn't it be much more difficult to shoot through it?

Sturdy hog or cattle panels is the answer, as 128'. 42"s tall is perfect. Chain link will not work as the hogs will slide right underneath them easily, unless its buried. Are you sure you want to dig 128' of soil?

With soft dirt and few rocks 128" is nothing to make a couple passes with a middle buster. Then ya just clean it out a little to get the fence in. Helo, if it was me I'd add some extra posts or at least some rebar stakes to stake the bottom so that it can't be pushed. JMO

How high can a hog jump?

I don't know if they will jump into a feede pen, but they can climb, especially at any corner. Several people have told me they seen hogs climb out of 6' tall topless traps.

Be sure to make it big enough to pull your truck in to load your feeder, sure makes it easier...hog panels are better than chain link, they will occasionally jump/crawl over it, cattle panels are taller and work good as well.

Cattle panels are up to $ 29.99 at Sutherland's in Del Rio, but even at that they are cheaper than hog panels. Lighter guage wire is the difference and the squares are bigger.

I agree with other posts, make it big! Also an irregular shape seems to work best, not square. I always try to tie in a tree or 3, using it as a post to further reduce the feeling of confinement.

I have seen them climb, but they did it in the corner. I don't know if they could do it to a round cage.

my panels are homemade, family we do metal fixturing for department stores.
Use steel side panels and tack some square paneling on about every 6 in.
Wired these to T-post in 8' intervals overlapping these 20' panels. Ran 1 string of barbwire around the top. The panels only sit about 3' high off the ground and then the wire eliminated the climing. Works very well and the deer dont mind any of it, not even the fact they are red and blue!
