While I've been a pretty diehard Savage guy for awhile I'm looking to buy a new rifle and the Remington SPS tactical fits the bill nicely. I just can't seem to make a decision on the caliber or barrel length. Before moving to Texas I probably wouldn't even be considering the .223, but it seems to be pretty popular in these parts with good success. This rifle will be used for target shooting along with some deer and hog hunting (<200 yards or so, as I have another rig for the long range shots)

SPS Tactical caliber/barrel length
single choice

Why would you shoot deer with a 223?
Unless your a kid or woman.

If you're going to hunt deer with it, go with the 308.

I question some of the questions that are asked here.

Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.

I second the questioning of questions here.

More appropriate questions:

What will the rifle PRIMARILY be used for? Game(varmints, deer, pigs...) type of hunting...

Do you own an AR -15 in 223 or an AR 10 in 308?

Do you have plans for/already have a silencer?

Before I can answer I'd need some more info....

Oh and the most important question... How in the hell did you post a poll????

The rifle will PRIMARILY be used for casual target shooting. I've never been hunting before, but I'd really like to at some point so I'd like this rifle to be up to the task. If I was to go hunting it would be for deer and pigs.

I don't own any semi auto rifles, just never really been my thing. I'm a bolt action guy.

I will be purchasing a suppressor in the next couple of months (should have it by Christmas '14 smile ). Still trying to make a decision on that also. AAC vs YHM? Thread on vs QD?

I have a SPS Tactical in 223 and absolutely love it for varmints, if I were going to hunt deer I'd go with the 308.

Thanks for the info.

Suppressor is in the works so 308 no doubt. 16.5 or 20" isn't that much difference in length... Especially since the suppressor is gonna make it as long as a railroad.

Now which suppressor is up to you but boils down to what host (s) will it be going on? If you plan on putting it on mag calibers you will need one rated for that.

As for the mount go QD. Way easier, way faster to switch, and simply more versatile.

Remington 700 AAC-SD 20" barrel, Pre threaded, 1-10 twist... I'd probably swap the stock and trigger out though as my personal preferences.

Pre scare I was looking to pull the trigger on one myself... But failed to do so before shtf.

16.5" .308

200 yards and in that'll be a handy rig.

Well, I finally hit the "buy it now" button on gunbroker before leaving to work last night. I ended up going with the .308 with a 16.5" barrel. Thanks for the responses guys. Now all I need to do is decide on a trigger, stock/chassis, suppressor, and scope! smile
