Yes sir. That's an old Tornado Gun we made in the late 50s. Charges that big using today's powder might make the Earth shift on its axis...well, not really. scared

It's a perforating gun. After a gas/oil well has been drilled and cased, guns containing shaped charges (the balls in the pic) are dropped in and set off. Although they don't contain a projectile, they burn holes in the walls of the casing and into the formation to let the product enter the well. Each charge in this gun from the 50s burned ~14,000 F.

Some of them we make can take a teaspoon of powder and burn a 1/2" hole through the casing and 8 feet into the formation.

Here is a pic of a test shot we turned into a model i have in my office to give yall a idea of what is going on thousands of feet in the ground. This shot came out of a modern carrier gun used these day most of the time.

Here's a pic from a 1954 CAMCO catalog I have. Note the hi-tech Wireline truck and the state of the art information gathering method. grin

That is interesting as heck. Perforations are more uniform than I had always imagined they would be.

And they don't always look the same. Here's sample of a shot designed to cut a clean hole. It doesn't clog up as fast as the ragged holes. It's a WELEX Mark I charge. WELEX invented Jet Perforating.

When you work with some of the wireline crews I do, you get used to it.

I just don't stand right next to the guns.

They used to perforate by dropping some nitro glycerine down the hole. Those guys were nuts. If the well kicked off after they dropped it, they'd just stand there and catch it on its way back out.
