Does anyone know the dates for the Kansas pheasant season for 2013-2014? I am trying to write some stuff down on the calendar.

November 9th 2013- January 31st 2014.

They're a little ahead on rainfall. Hopefully it keeps up!

What are the best states to hunt in? Is there some forumla like cheap fees and abundant game? Or is any state pretty much or the same?

That depends on what game you wish to hunt. All states that I know have a wildlife department website that will give you plenty of information. Most also have a survey system which they estimate what population exist in their state. Kansas has several survey methods on pheasants and they post it online usually in Sept. or Oct. Okla. does two surveys on quail, Aug. and again in Oct., the round up and estimate is usually posted online in late Oct. S. Dakota has their methods to. So I would recommend researching the wildlife Dept. website. Information on license cost and fees are also on the site. Public hunting area maps are also on the website. Plenty information there for you to make your decision.

Another source for information is Upland hunting magazines in the early fall. Examples are Upland Journal, Shooting Sportsman, Pointing Dog Journal, Gun Dog etc. Usually the magazine forecasts cover a lot of states, East coast to West. They often get their information from State Wildlife Depts.

Read those wildlife Dept. websites very carefully. N. Dakota has restrictions on out of state hunters in the first of the season. S. Dakota restricts out of staters to two five day periods with a break in between and you must declare the second five days at the time you buy the license. Some states have a 3 or 5 day license that is cheaper that a full season license, Okla. is an example. Montana, on the other hand, post online their WMA locations but there is also a lot of land that you can hunt that is not on those locations. Like school lands and Bureau of Land management lands and Federal WMAs. Information on those other lands has to be obtained from other sources.

Most all areas in Kansas are still extremely dry and will take many good rains to recover to have good pheasant habitat again.
