Does anyone offer private or group lessons in the Dallas area for someone interested in improving their shooting skills and having a better understanding of rifle and scope mechanics?

Welcome to the THF, hope you enjoy talking to us.

I am sure if you look around, someone will be more than willing to help you part with some of your $$$$$, but as BIL said, ask your questions on here, there are a lot of good folks on this site that are more than happy to help a person out.

Yes, there is an abundance of on this site, but, there is plenty of good information also.

Thanks for the response. I hang my hat in Dallas.
Trying to improve my accuracy. Not sure if my form is correct due to the fact I have never been able to group shots very well. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The ability to group shots may not and probably does not have anything to do with your form.

Total experience with firearms goes a long way to helping with such things as being able to get a rifle to group its shots.

What type of groups are you expecting or wanting to shoot, MOA, 3 shots within an inch of each other at 100 yards? 3 shots you can cover with a quarter or a dime?

What type rifle are you shooting? What type and power of scope? Are you using a scope or iron sights.

Are you wanting "bench rest" target accuracy or hunting accuracy?

Not meaning to hit you with so many questions, but with your stating that you are having problems shooting groups, it will help to have a little information on some of the parameters you are working within.

Looking for better hunting accuracy.
30.06, 25.06, .243
Utilizing scopes on all three guns.
For me being able to group shots on the range translates into better confidence in the field.

Good, you have 3 really good calibers to work with.

Now, what kind of groupings are you trying to obtain.

Hunting accuracy would be 3 shots inside of 2 inches at 100 yards.

Target accuracy would be 3 shots from any of those guns touching or in almost the exact same hole at 100 yards.

What type of accuracy are you wanting.

For me, putting my first shot from the bench within an inch, inch and a half of my aim point is good enough.

I really haven't seen many animals that if hit with the first shot are going to stand around and wait for that second shot.

What is your goal as far as accuracy is concerned?

IMO if you can place the first shot exactly where you want it, there will not be any need for follow up shots.

I am trying to improve my hunting accuracy. When I go to the range shot placement is all over the target. That why I question if my form, setup, etc. is correct.

OK TIP #1 IF USING A REST ( WHICH YOU SHOULD ALWAYS TRY TO DO ) PUT THE STOCK ON THE REST NOT THE BARRELL.

Do your rifles have trigger jobs? Example you buy a rifle and the trigger is typically 6-9lbs; if you take it to a gunsmith he can lighten it to about 2-4 lbs. This will help a new shooter tremendously in groups.

Have you tried more than one ammo?
How bad are your groups?
Are you shooting your scope on the highest setting?

Yes I do put the stock on the rest.
I have tried a few different ammos.
Scope is on the highest setting.
Have had a trigger job on one of the rifles and my groups are slightly better.
High-Left or Low-Right of bullseye most all of the time.
Group within 2-3 inches

IF YOU ARE SHOOTING 2-3 INCH GROUPS YOU "SHOULD" BE ABLE TO ADJUST YOUR SCOPE WHERE THE GROUPS ARE AROUND THE BULL. JUST FROM WHAT YOU'VE SAID SO FAR I SUSPECT IT IS SOMETHING YOU ARE DOING, NOT THE GUN OR AMMO BUT....

YOU'RE PROBABLY RIGHT, YOU NEED TO BE AT THE RANGE WITH SOMEONE THAT CAN TELL YOU WHAT IS HAPPENING AND WHY.
LOTS OF THINGS CAN EFFECT PERFORMANCE, DIRTY, CLEAN, HOT, OR COLD BARRELL. THEN THERE ARE OTHER THINGS THAT YOU THE SHOOTER MAY BE DOING.
IF NOTHING ELSE TAKE A FRIEND WHO SHOOTS AND LET HIM SEE IF HE GETS BETTER RESULTS WITH THE SAME GUN.
THEN AGAIN IT MAY BE THE GUN IT'S SELF. I HAVE GUNS I CAN COVER THREE HOLES WITH A DIME AND SOME THAT WOULD TAKE A SAUCER TO COVER.

I have had a friend shot the guns and he is accuracy is much better than mine. That is why I think it is my technique.

The only thing that vwill help your technique, is prastice.

You say that someone you know can shoot the guns better than you, so my guess is that you set down and let that person show you what they are doing and you pay attention.

I would pm bayourat and buy a dove hunt for him and see if he can show you a few pointers on your rifle shooting. He didnt really make me shoot better but he corrected my form on the rest etc. He used to shoot bench. This way you can shoot your rifle and some birds. Pm him and see what you can do its worth a try.
