Looking for some ideas regarding what brand and power scope to install on new 6.8 which just arrived. Want to get a good quality and thinking about 16X maximum adjustable. Main use will be varmit and possibly whitetail deer.
Any input or suggestions would be appreciated, especially if you have experience with this caliber. Would like to stay under $1K USD.

Zeiss 6.5 -20 or 4.5-14. I have both and they are great for the money.

I have the 4.5-14 on a Larue Quick detach on my 6.8 Wilson. It works great. I take it off and put the night vision on, then put it back on and it is still on zero. Larue has the best QD detachable mounts.

This http://swfa.com/Vortex-4-16x50-Viper-PST-30mm-Rifle-Scope-P44561.aspxMaybe the SS 3-15x (phone malfunction can't copy link). No one has tried this one yet, but I have extensive experience with the 5-20x and am extremely impressed.

I just put a Leupold VX-3 LR 4.5-14x40 on my 6.8. I've never been much for Leupold but the last 2 scopes I've purchased have been Leupolds and they have been pretty nice. Really for the 6.8 the 14 power is overkill but it's nice. Also might look at the VX-R lineup they have a 12 power, really nice glass for the price and a red dot for late shots on coyotes. 6.8 is really only capable for clean shots on dear out to about 250 yards depending on placement. I probably wouldn't go over 150 with mine on a deer. If you zero at 200, it's +2.5 at 100 and -13.5 at 300. At 300 yds your velocity is only like 1250 fps, if I remember correctly.

I agree with Oldpaint too. It's almost impossible to beat Larue mounts.

I have been hunting with a 6.8 for about 5 years and have ran all sorts of optics on them.. How do you plan to use it for hunting? Personally, I hate big scopes on an AR used for hunting as I like to use them for stalk hunting, driving around the lease, etc.. something like a 1-6 is about ideal I have been running a S&B 1.5-6 primarily on mine but have been using a 2MOA T1 more recently for hog hunting.. another great 1.5-6x42 scope is the Meopta ZD Glass that rivals S&B, priced where you want, illuminated reticle I am sure Skylar could hook you up with a good deal with a mount.. http://swfa.com/Meopta-15-6x42-Meostar-R1-30mm-Rifle-Scope-P53612.aspx

Why on earth do you need 16x for a 6.8?
Just get a 3x9 or 2x10 and be done. Keep your gun light and compact.

I agree. After I put the 4.5-14 on mine, I was like why did I do that. But on the other hand it gives me a reason to buy a new scope and a new gun to better match the scope I have.

I feel 100% confident on the cartridge out to 300 yards with the right ammo, 400 is really max for 100% reliable bullet performance. Having said that, if I plan on hunting where I am expecting 3-400 yard shots I grab one of my bolt actions.. headshot view at 250 yards on steel Buck taken at 325 with 95 TTSX pre production test bullets.. From a few weeks ago... stalk hunt at day break, 95g TTSX

At 300 yds your velocity is only like 1250 fps, if I remember correctly. I disagree with this statement. If you run the numbers on a ballistics calculator you get surprising results. These numbers are from my handloads. Some are very hot. 110 accubond @500 yards 1621fps from a 20.77" 120 SST @500 yards 1627fps from a 20.77" 140 VLD @700 yards 1481fps from a 20.77" These numbers are from factory load data. 110 SSA accubond Tac Load @500 yards 1583 from a 16" 110 SSA accubond @500 yards 1526 from a 16" 120 SST @500 yards 1522 from a 16" 140 SSA VLD @600 yards 1493 from a 16" I have confirmed kills on both deer and pigs at 300 yards, but I would not be shy to take a shot at 400 yards (depending on shooting conditions), but I have shot at these distances at the range and know my ability at different distances. Last deer season I took a older doe @250 shooting a handloaded 120 SST from a Stag 7H.

Any input or suggestions would be appreciated, especially if you have experience with this caliber. Would like to stay under $1K USD. I really like Trijicon's accupoint 3-9x40 for bench/blind work. The glass is super clear and has awesome low light for a 40mm objective, plus no batteries. This is the exact one I have. http://www.amazon.com/Accupoint-Mil-Dot-Crosshair-Riflescope-Green/dp/B001QT3WT0/ref=pd_sim_sbs_sg_1If all my shots where under 200 yards and I would also use it as a spot and stalk I would go for this model. http://www.amazon.com/Accupoint-1-25-4-T...s=1-4+accupointI cannot see using a 3-9x40 for a spot and stalk gun. It is very hard to get a quick shot off at 3 power, for me at least. So the way I fixed that was to have another rifle just for spot and stalk and topped that with a red dot.

That is kind of where my 6.8 has evolved to, stalk hunting for hogs mainly with the red dot and driving around on the property.

Thanks for the input and suggestions. Looking mainly at shoots under 250 yards. I hope to work it in on a few pigs, coyotes, and some whitetail.
Agree with the lighter scope as it will be for stalking and not wanting to end up with a heavy rifle. Looking to have a very clear image typically the only time I would use the higher power is at the range.
Have some 110 grain Triple shock rounds and will also try some 115gr, as well as some of the lighter fodder. New Rock River upper is just waiting for some glass then off to the range.
Zeiss or Vortex, son says Vortex. Will let you know what I end up ordering next week.

The 110 TTSX is a pretty good bullet, but for a monolithic I would opt for their 95gr version. Monolithic typically need more velocity to function properly, so a little lighter bullet will extend the range a bit. Plus the 110 was never designed to be used in a 6.8 that is why they developed the 95gr version. I cannot think of any 115gr hunting bullets off the top of my head. Here is a list of my favorite bullets for hunting, also price is a determining factor too. I will leave out the ones that are only available to reloaders, But there is one more that would be added to the list. 1)Hornady 120 SST 2)SSA 110 Accubond Tac Load 3)SSA 95 TTSX Tac Load 4)SSA 110 Pro-Hunter Tac Load

Agreed with the above on the ammo I have used it all but pretty much run only the 95 TTSX
Another good scope option would be the LEUPOLD VX6 1-6 illuminated German 4

Leaning toward the VX-R Leupold 4-12x40 30mm as it is more compact and has the firedot system. Should be able to balance well with the firearm and still be very good for spot and stalk type shooting. Hope to place order shortly . . .

After shooting 400 yards multiple times now at my lease I believe it was closer to 500. Anyways this was using a 110vmax (not a great big game round) . I'd trust it over 250 on deer any day especially with good placement
