Nope. Ok to shoot 223 in 5.56, but can not shoot 5.56 in 223.

The tolerances for the 223 are higher than the 5.56. Meaning you can fire 223 in an AR but don't use 5.56 ammunition in a 223 you may get some unwanted results.

Starting to see bullets show up "in sotck" in several of the online providers. Prices still aren't what they used to be but last night I was able to pick up some 7mm bullets from Natchezss at resonalble prices. i.e. $23-$25/100.

I followed the panic fairly closely. I got caught flat footed back in 2008 and ended up with about 20 rnds for deer season for me and my wife to share in 2009. As it turned out that was way more than plenty but this go around I prepared a little. Once things fleshed out again from the first election I built a minor stockpile for ammo and took up reloading which has really helped. My family had always been the "need a box of ammo, buy a box of ammo" guys. We never had more than a handfull rnds at any given time.

This election, the panic hit like a wave. First semiauto rifles, then handguns, then ammo, then reloading supplies. I personally think the wave is passing over. I'm seeing more AR's. The local shop probably has 20. He is charging a couple hundred over normal but not scalp you prices. Ammo is still at super low levels. Reloading supplies mostly gone but did get a lb of unique and 1000 small pistol primers this past weekend.

The sad thing is I know guys that loved the panic. Frankly it made thier year. It gave an excuse to buy exactly what they wanted and not have to worry about price. It added excitement. It allowed them to experience the hobby in somewhat total emmersion. It was on TV, Radio, in the stores and at the work place.

On prices, I've noticed that some places are still trying to make the extra buck. Some places have realized that this will end and that they have to survive after Ammo to Go, Midway USA, Academy, and Walmart are fully stocked again.

If you didn't see this panic coming, you simply weren't paying attention. Many of us were buying at an accelerated rate last summer/fall and aren't sweating it now. If you feel that ammo pricing will settle down and stay at "the old prices" you will once again get caught short.

I'm NOT suggesting buying at panic prices - because I simply refuse to do that!! I just swing by Walmart on my way to work early mornings a few days a week and always walk out with some ammo that I shoot anyway. Same thing I've always done - just more often.........

Sunday morning I got another 300 rounds of Federal 55gr .223 fmj for $34.00 per box.
Saturday it was (3) boxes of 50 brass cased .223 55gr. for $16.95 per box.
Last week I stocked up on .357 mag HP and .45 acp

I grab some .308 and .30-30 when I see it every week or two. I have to say that .22 lr is still scarce, but I bought a bunch of Federal at Walmart last year for $20 per 555 bulk pack.

Between potential new taxes/controls and raw inflation, I'm betting that ammo will climb rapidly. I don't see myself as "hoarding" just because I buy a few boxes each week and put them up. I see it as planning ahead in a slow but methodical way.

Ammo is something that I will always use, and it certainly stores well. Last weekend it was great to watch the grandkids blow through bulk packs of .22 because I have it to spare.

Again, if a person feels that $.02 .22lr and $.25 5.56.223 is right around the corner - they should ignore my ranting and carry on.

There IS a difference in 223 and 5.56 rounds. Although the same dimensions, they differ in their pressures. SAAMI specs tell the story. http://www.thegunzone.com/556v223.html
People who post there is no difference should be very careful because you just may have the weak receiver in a rifle stamped 223 cal that the higher pressure 5.56 rounds might cause problems with.

The panic is still in gear, my wife wanted to go to Academy so I tagged along, she shopped clothes and I went to the sporting goods. The ammo aisle was busy at 2PM in the afternoon, more ammo than I have seen in a while, but still not stocked like before.

Didn't find anything I needed, but for the guys in Abilene area if you shoot the magnums I saw a few boxes of most "flavors".

Why does life have to be made so difficult!?! As life goes on we can improve on a product as it gets older or produced over many years. But, as my life gets older it seems that the goverment does everything it can to make things way more difficult and screw with something that has proven to work all these years!!!!

I know. Amazing how we all survived this long. Our grandparents must have been barbarians, they smoked and drank and ate bacon. A lot. cheers

I dropped by Academy at lunch yesterday... the shelves had lots of shotgun stuff, 4.46mm Fiocci, 44mag, and 327 magnum, but that's about it. Plus, there were a dozen other guys picking over the ammo shelves besides me.

The panic isn't over and people are still hording.

Quick, let me call and get my banker's ok on a loan and buy some ammo that Natchez Shooters Supply just posted. Only $100 for 10 rounds for 5.56. Is this a bargain or what? Sad sAd saD - they should be ashamed.

I got the same ad, but you left off a 0. It's $1.00/rd for 62 gr. green tip.

If your weapon is not made to shoot 5.56 do not use it. The pressure is much higher for the 5.56 round. 223 is ok to shoot with weapons made for 5.56. Do your research!
