Ok I'm not that experienced and have lots to learn. Seems like the best way to hunt turkeys is to find the roost and call at em when they fly down. But lets say you don't know where the roost is but know it's close to where you are hunting and the place gets turkeys. My question is when to start calling to them? If you're not close enough to hear them come off roost? Do you wait for them to gobble first? Sorry if that is wordy to ask my question.

I use an owl call at first light to try to figure out where they are roosted and move to a crow call after day break. I don't like to hen call to locate ion the morning unless nothing else will work. If I don't hear any gobbles early on I will set up in a known area that the turkey frequent and call for 30 minutes to an hour. Sometimes toms will come in without gobbling and sometimes it just takes a while before you hear a gobble.

At first light, setup in your best turkey spot and call about every 15 minutes. Just two sets or a few clucks/purrs. If you get a response, wait a minute and call softly and see what happens. At 10 am move around and call every 15 to 30 minutes or so. I have never hunted a roost and still do well. I still have no idea where they roost in years of hunting. My old lease they sure didn't roost there but they came through everyday sometime.

Just stand around and listen. Often times I'll just wait at the gate at my place until there is a bit of light. Then once I get a gobble go after it. You can hear them from a mile away if it isn't windy. Then hopefully you will know your property enough to know where to setup.
