Know a guy in Oklahoma that was entertaining the idea of having scimitars on his place and selling a few hunts. The question is: how much are the permits, where do you get them, and are they worth getting?

There are two permits required one for interstate selling or buying hoof stock and a second take permit for each hunter. These permits require periodic inspections by USFWS and paper work/fees to register each year. This is the reason so many Texas ranches have opted not to register nor offer permitted hunts on these fabulous Antelopes. Permit cost is not high per hunt ($100) but it may be difficult to comply economically with a small herd if you buy and sell animals interstate which requires the second permit ($200) The upside is not may Estate Ranches will offer these hunts making it a limited special deal for those who do. http://www.fws.gov/international/permits/by-species/three-antelope.html

There is no permits needed for buying and sales of interstate breeding and purchases, i have discussed this directly with the EWA and other groups and only permit needed is for the harvests of the species listed.

I have the paperwork for Scimitar Oryx and Barasingha deer. I have not had to deal with any inspections and I have consulted with a few other breeders that raised the barsingha for many years now and have never had to deal with an inspection.
To get a cull & take permit you first have to have the breeder permit and commit to having a breeding herd on your place for a certain period of time. The hardest part about the permit was waiting to get it. No inspection and really very little hassle.
For us it was 10x harder to deal with TPWD for a MLDP program for whitetails than it was to deal with the permits for the scimitar oryx and barasingha deer.
I keep hearing about the hopeful change on the permit system and that will be great if it comes true.

Sounds good, if not we will find that second axis lol. Just remember as far as the wife. It is better to ask for forgiveness than permission lol.

Thanks Curtis... good post. I also have a small herd of barasingha and about 30 scimitar and am exploring the permit system. Basically wanting to control the population. The EWA has good info and if I decide to sell a hunt will send the 10% to them. I just need to contact USFWS for clarification on cull permits. Their paperwork states "In order to authorize outside hunters (individuals not employed by the ranch) to cull excess animals, the ranch must have the CBW and CULL Permit." Would you interpret this as ranchhands not needing anything and if not, what about possession, taxidermy or processing? I too, keep hearing about the possible permit changes, but have for several months now.
