We went to our new Kansas Lease for the first time this weekend...we found several ticks on each one of us... what do I do? The best thing? These things are creaping me out!!! And I don't get creaped out easy... I have worked for 2 people that had lime disease and that stuff is evil!

Take an old sock. Partially fill it with powdered sulfur (I add alittle GOLD BOND powder to the sock also). Dust around your socks (best to not get too much actually on your skin). Redust periodically. Has worked pretty good for me here in Missouri. Had a friend that took several garlic tablets (the ones w/o a smell). Did not keep all the ticks off, but sure decreased the number he did get.

If you know you in an area where ticks are a problem, put a dog flea and tick collar around each of your boots.

get some guineas...they will eat the suckers.
My in-laws live in Sylvia KS and they had ticks really bad. Every time we went we were always getting ticks...since they added the guineas to the farm...no more ticks...not even on the dogs!

Spray your cloths down with permethrin.
It will last for a couple washings. It the same thing all your bug off clothing has in it.

Sporting goods store should have it.

I started using it after hearing Ray Sasser recommend it years ago. It is only approved for treating your clothing, but I have lightly sprayed my ankles and wrists with it, but YMMV. I wouldn't consider going spring turkey hunting without Permanone.

One of my buddies that hunts Africa every year uses Heartz Flea and Tick shampoo for his daily shower when he's out hunting.
Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.

+100 for the Sawyers permethrin in the spray pump. Don't forget to spray your hat, gloves, and boots too.

You guys be very careful when using the permethrin based sprays and try not to get too much skin exposure, it absorbs very easily through the skin. I would definitely spray the clothes while not being worn and allow them to dry for a couple hours before wearing them. And be sure to wash them separate from clothing that isn't treated.
You guys enjoy the cypermethrin based chemicals while you can. If history is any indicator, they won't be around for a lot longer. Recent EPA laws have dramatically changed how and where we can use them. We saw the same legislation get handed down to our industry right before the demise of the chlorinated hydrocarbons(chlordane) and the organophosphates(Durban, diazinon). After the change in regulations, they were both taken off the market within 5 yrs.
Happy hunting!

Happy hunting! Agree "You guys be very careful when using the permethrin based sprays and try not to get too much skin exposure." Be careful around cats and fish. http://www.epa.gov/oppsrrd1/REDs/factsheets/permethrin_fs.htmhttp://npic.orst.edu/pest/mosquito/ptc.htmlThere is a study somewhere where the ultimate combination for anything biting, crawling, blood sucking is permethrin-deet. http://www.tractorsupply.com/en/store/gordonsreg%3B-permethrin-10-livestock--premise-spray-8-fl-oz

I can't tell you how many people(at least a hundred) have told me over the years that the Avon Skin So Soft lotion is great for keeping fleas/ticks off. I wish I knew what was in it, that isn't in the other brands, that makes it so effective. In that it is 100% safe, I would recommend trying this before saturating clothing with pesticide.

I haven't tried Avon Skin So Soft for ticks. But it sure works for mosquitos and gnats when fishing in the marsh.

My mom is 87 and sold Avon since the 1960's so she had that stuff on us (avon skin so soft) most of our lives, it works.

For me dressing right is most of it.
If Im in a tick rich area I will tuck my shirt in wear a belt, don't wear a button up shirt if I do wear a tshirt under it and always wear a hat. I spray down seams and ancles waste neckline and arms of shirt with a heavy shot of off and it serves me pretty well.

Fill an old sock with garden sulfur. Pat your cloths down using the sock with sulfur. Make sure not to miss your socks and bare legs. If you are hunting with dogs, you can pat them down with the sock as well. I also used to put garlic in my dogs food. If you like garlic, eat plenty of it during hunting season, the ticks will stay away.

It took 8 months before I found a Dr that would even think about testing me because "THEY KNEW BETTER" many will go years before they find out. Read up on Lyme and don't get bit by ticks.

This and use the flea collars around your ankles too; I had to avoid hunting certain river bottoms because of they were so bad on a buddies place. I found out about permethrin and wore rubber boots with flea colars and havent had a single issue since no matter how bad they are. As for chiggers .... if you happen to get a dose of them the easiest way to kill them is with a shallow luke warm bath with a cap full of bleach in it.

FYI-The permethrin products kill them on contact, they are not just repellents.
