I love my New Balance model 673 light weight hiking boots. They work for about 90% of my hunting.

for every stereotype there's a prototype don't be the prototype

I have a pair of un-insulated Danner Pronghorns. (They do have the layer of gore-tex for water-proofing) They're snake boots, not too warm on dove hunts, and a slightly thicker sock is plenty for deer season in Texas.

I assume you're talking about hunting in Texas and not someplace like Michigan. With that assumption in place, here are my 2 cents.

First off, if all you're going to be doing is walking to a box blind it doesn't really matter what you wear. However, if you're going to be on your feet hunting, nothing's more important than your footwear. Everyone has different feet and you have to find what boot fits your feet best.

For example: Some people love the Keen sandals and boots, but Keens absolutely KILL my feet for some reason. Everyone's different. Try on lots of pairs at a big box store like Cabelas or Bass Pro and find one that fits your foot the best.

I'm a BIG Danner fan. Not a Rocky Boots fan. I had a problem with a pair of Rocky Boots a few years back and they just flat wouldn't stand behind their product. They threw out every excuse under the sun to not cover their faulty product so I'm done with them. I won't ever buy a Rocky Boot again. Maybe they have been good for some, but not for me.

So having said that, I've had several pair of Danners over the years and they've always been tough as a...well...boot grin and stood up well. But, of course, nothing lasts forever so I got more Danner boots as time went by. They aren't cheap but boots are VERY important to a hunt where you're going to be on your feet, spot and stalk or climbing. Having the wrong boots on your feet can and has ruined a hunt. I've worn them in the snow and climbing mountains in New Zealand after Tahr; spot and stalk in Africa; and walking for miles and miles in Argentina.

If cost isn't really a object you might try these Danners for something light:

http://www.cabelas.com/product/Footwear/Mens-Footwear/Mens-Hiking-Boots/Mens-Mid-High-Hiking-Boots%7C/pc/104797980/c/104747580/sc/104383080/i/104104980/Danner-6-Light-II-GTX-Hikers/1217266.uts?destination=%2Fcatalog%2Fbrowse%2Ffootwear-mens-footwear-mens-hiking-boots-mens-mid-high-hiking-boots%2F_%2FN-1101188%2FNs-CATEGORY_SEQ_104104980%3FWTz_l%3DSBC%253BMMcat104797980%253Bcat104383080&WTz_l=SBC%3BMMcat104797980%3Bcat104383080%3Bcat104104980

If you're going to be carrying a pack or a heavy load, you might want something with more support so you can try the all leather version:

http://www.cabelas.com/product/Footwear/Mens-Footwear/Mens-Hiking-Boots/Mens-Mid-High-Hiking-Boots%7C/pc/104797980/c/104747580/sc/104383080/i/104104980/Danner174-Mountain-Light8482-II-Hiking-Boots/1217260.uts?destination=%2Fcatalog%2Fbrowse%2Ffootwear-mens-footwear-mens-hiking-boots-mens-mid-high-hiking-boots%2F_%2FN-1101188%2FNs-CATEGORY_SEQ_104104980%3FWTz_l%3DSBC%253BMMcat104797980%253Bcat104383080&WTz_l=SBC%3BMMcat104797980%3Bcat104383080%3Bcat104104980

If you want something higher, you can try the Pronghorn mentioned above.

And last but certainly not least, you can try the Cabela's brand boot and it's on SALE right now!

Just my thoughts. Boots are a very personal choice.

Danner Pronghorns are my favorite, as well. They are very comfortable and one of the few good boots you can get without 800-1,000 grams of insulation.

I have a pair of columbia mid weight hiking boots that I wear for pretty much everything in the outdoors. They are not waterproof, but other than that I love them. I'll post the exact model later.

The one thing I'll add is that if you're going to get a pair of boots to wear hunting, and you plan on being on your feet a lot, I would strongly encourage you to get them a few months ahead of time and break them in.

I have a few pairs.

I have an OLD pair of Danners that I can't bring myself to get rid of. Had them when I was in the Air Force (22 years ago) and am coming up on their 3rd resole.

Rockys. Waterproof and insulated. Had 'em for around 4 years and they're ok.

My favorites are my Wolverines. 7 years old, waterproof and insulated. Probably the most comfortable pair of boots I own.

Oh, and for this time of year I have a pair of Chippewa snake boots. Insulated (lightly) and waterproof. Comfy enough but a PAIN in the butt to take off. May need to get a set of zippers installed.

I was already leaning towards the pronghorns (which are on sale at cabelas online only right now, fyi).

This sold me. I love getting shoes I can resole.

LaCrosse Alphy Burly's
I have 2 pair, 1 is insulated with just neoprene and the other is 1200 gr thinsulate. I let the weather tell me what I will wear. Generally, in TX all I wear at the neoprene insulated and I wear the others in the MidWest.

I got a pair of rocky pull on's

Wear them for work till they don't look good enough and then they turn into work/weekend boots. Stay plenty warm for hunting in texas, are relatively cheap and Ive got my first pair I got my senior year in hi-school so they are 10 years old... look like hell stink, but are still the most comphy pair of shoes/boots I have ever put my foot in.

Mind you I walk between 2.5 and 3 miles a day at lunch. That pair of boots has more miles on it than some of the people on here trucks.

Danner Pronghorns get another vote. I have a pair that are going on 4 yrs old now. Without a doubt the most comfortable boot I have. I put mine on the first time and wore them all day. I have not been able to do that with any other brand of hunting boot.

They're good ones. This will probably be the last time, there's not a lot left to resole to. I keep them up in the cabin at the ranch, I wear them to work up there in. When I finally do get rid of them, I'll get another pair. I also have a pair of Wolverine slip on ropers that are 17 or 18 years old on their 4th resole. The DuraShock soles are ok but don't last quite as long.

Get you a pair of Filson's and when the sole wears out get em re-soled. Most comfortable boots you will ever wear.I have one pair with Makinaw wool lining and the other pair uninsulated.I have had these 2 boots over 10 years, had them resoled once.I usually wear insulated in the morning and switch to uninsulated in the evening.West Texas can be very cold in the morning and very warm in evening. It also gives them the chance to dry out by rotating them everyday.02$.

My wife swears by her Danner Pronghorns...

For me, an un-insulated pair of all-leather, work-style boots with good wool socks gets my vote. My current LaCrosses have a Gore-Tex liner, and I keep the leather full of Mink Oil.

I prefer fewer seams (larger pieces of leather.) They take a little longer to break in, but make for fewer places for thread failure and moisture penetration.

Speaking of boots, I've got a pair of Ariats that I bought a while back, I've worn them several times, but they still give blisters bad. I'm a bit of a tender foot, so what's good to stop this? Thicker socks?

I was thinking about standing in some hot water to let them form, maybe, to my feet..

Where are you getting the blisters? I have worn Ariats for several years. They are not the most comfortable boots I have ever worn, but they are tough as nails. You shouldn't be getting blisters, though.

I have a pair of the old style Pronghorns that are awesome and still fine after about 9 years of abuse all over Texas. I don't use them that much anymore since I decided I wanted a hiker instead due to lower boot, and tougher construction (support) for some of the places I keep finding myself in. I currently use a pair of Vasque Wasatch backpacking boots. I'm pretty happy with them so far!

Beware, Danner has redesigned the Pronghorn, and it's certainly not as comfortable as it used to be! I tried some on at Cabela's and they were instantly in the 'these won't work' category. Exactly opposite of when I bought my first Pronghorns, which I never wanted to take off after first putting them on.

This is what I was kind of thinking about. I know that sometimes they redesign things when it isn't needed. I hope it isn't the case.
