After 25 years of running a straight 4x scope on my carry around rifle, I finally broke down and changed to a 1-7x. My eyes aren't what they used to be. The rifle is a Winchester Model 70, and there are not a lot of mounts for it that can get these newer, very short scopes back far enough. I opted for a one piece steel picatinny rail, which Larry Pockrus beveled for me so the objective bell would clear the front of the rail so the scope could come back far enough. He did it on the fly for me, for which I tipped him 30%, and the work was excellent as usual.

I got great help from the guys at SWFA for picking the new scope, and getting a base/ring combo that would keep the scope low enough for my taste. They also helped me out with a set of 35mm rings for the larger scope on my heavy barrel. The old rings were so high, I had to shoot it with a chin weld instead of a cheek weld. It's a much better setup now.

After getting all set up, I went out to Quail Creek with 40 rounds of zombie max. Temperature was cool, breeze was mild, and I was shooting one group per 20 minute cease fire out of each rifle. I shot 2-round groups at first at 25, 50, and 100 yards. I was happy after the first box of zombie max. Groups were tight and consistent. The first round out of the second box yielded 2" 5-round groups at 100 yards out of both rifles. The second box was junk and, after I shot it all out, I shot some federal premium and both rifles shot tight. I think the zombie max ammo is generic quality.

Its always gratifying when a plan comes together, especially trying to make something new fit on something old. SWFA does Texas proud!

2" 5 shot? I'd keep looking for ammo.

I just picked up that zombie max because it was cheap at a recent gun show. There are factory loads both rifles shoot well. I may work up a load this summer.
