I am new to reloading and have not found a suitable load recipe for 55 gr ballistic tip. Can anyone please share their success in getting an accurate load together for the 55 grain? Thanks for any help you can give guys!

H335 is great for me, but you just have to find something your gun shoots well. What powder/bullets have you tried so far? You mean the nosler ballistic tips, right? What gun?

Oddly enough, my 223 (Ruger Hawkeye) doesn't seem to like the 55 grain bullets. It shoots them Ok, but not great. I may find the perfect 55 gr load next week or so, but I haven't found it yet. My rifle (1 in 9 twist) shoots the 40 gr Ballistic Tip just great and also shoots the 65 gr Sierra GK great. Unless you are just hung up on 55 grainers, try a 50 grainer or a 40 grainer.
The 40 grainer, loaded pretty hot, is not that far behind the velocity of 55 grainers in my 220 Swift.
As for powder, AA2230 works great behind that 65 gr Sierra GK. For the 40 gr Nosler BT, H335 works best. And on the 55 grainers, Varget is the best I've found so far.

55gr to 75gr Varget has worked well for me. Good thing since that is one of the powders I use most anyway.

Night Skunk: Ok, here you go, Have an older Reminton .223 ADL, its my main meat hunter! 55grns Nosler BT, 22.4 grns of IMR 4895, yes 4895, brass is all .010 under min length, CCI BR primers, dont have OAL in front of me, but tips of bullets is NOT touching lands on this 24" reg taper barrel! This grp is yeilding now .625" grps at a 90yd target. Not sure of your setup, but give it a try if someone near you has some 4895 to loan you. gud luck, be safe......

Thanks! That sounds like a great set-up. I will plan on getting that together and play with that one to see what I can do. I am shooting out of a Colt Match Target AR 15. It's grouping quite well with Factory Hornady V-Max. I want to be a little more self sufficient in loading my own.

Late Update.......Hogflyer, thank you!, thank you! & thank you! I started 22.1 thru 22.6 gr of the IMR 4895 like you suggested. I wound it down ,to 22.3 and 22.4. I shot another group based on those weights and ended up choosing the 22.3 gr set up. Grouping at abou 1/2" at 100 yrds with my Colt Match Target. Again, thanks for the schooling!

I've had good luck with Ramshot TAC and the 55gr Nosler Varmageddon projectiles. I shoot that out of three of my (1/7 twist) ARs and it's been extremely accurate; go figure a 55gr would work in a 1/7 so well Varget, H380, or benchmark should also work equally well.

You need to look at the rifling of you barrel. 1:10 is as fast of a twist as you can really go for 55gr... 1:12 is better, but its hard to find a 223 with the 1:12 twist these days.
If you have a faster twist try slowing the 55gr down to maybe 2300 of 2400fps. that may get you a better light load...

I have shot literally dozens of 1-8 and 1-9 twist barreled .223's that shoot 40 to 55gr bullets just fine. Most were running well above 3000fps as well and will easily group under MOA.

I have a 1-12 twist 20" NEF .223 and a 1-9 twist 20" DPMS A2 AR. They both shoot 55 grain .223 close enough as to be almost identical. Both are sub MOA.

When working up a new load as a rule I use at least two books to start and make about 3 or 4 loads on ea. I wish to try..I go to the range w/a note book and try them..Many times I get 1/2in groups with most but usually a couple of the loads w/shoot one hole groups...and thats where I end up..A 223 is very easy to reload for, but I would caution you to make sure your ammo chambers correctly prior to loading a lot, and I'd really make sure my weapon was clean..Give it the best shot..DD

I'm having good luck with 23.9 grains of Vihtavuori N133, CCI 400 primers and Nosler 55 grain Varmageddon FBHP bullets with an OAL of 2.222. I'm consistently averaging.75" 5 shot groups at 100 yards. I think I'm more limited by the godawful trigger on my AR, than the round itself. Either way, I'll take it.
