I'm getting a new lease this year and will need a feeder pen to keep cattle out. Do most of you use panels or barb wire? What are the pros and cons of each method?

Use panels if you are worried at all about hogs too.

Wire will be fine for just cattle as long as it is stretched tight.

There are some good threads on this topic on here...the search should bring up some good ones.

There are hogs on the lease, but the lease is in a one buck county. Would it be crazy to build a pen with panels to keep everything but deer out and a second pen that would allow hogs to have access? Just trying to figure out how to get my monies worth from the lease.

I used barbed wire for a couple of years. It still didn't keep the cows out. I ended up using panels and haven't had a problem since. If you use panels, use a minimum of 6 and trim the 2 top sections off. Another advantage to using panels, they are easier to move if you find a better spot to feed or better land to hunt. If you want hogs to be able to get in to your pen, you can make a 5' section of barbed wire between two of the panels. I have one set up this way and pigs get in and out just fine.

Use 34" hog panel. I use 10 or 12 in a circle. Or as close to a circle as you can get it. It will keep the cows and hogs out, unless they really want in. Then nothing will keep them out. Enough corn is usually thrown outside the pen to keep the hogs interested.

I have had good success with 25' diameter, welded wire pens. Key is getting 36" or taller, stretching it tight and using at least 10 t-posts and anchoring the bottom with stakes every 3-4' or so. Less costly investment than cattle panels and has been working for 2 seasons for me.

We try to make sure that no corn goes outside the pen to keep the hogs from bothering the deer.

You don't want Hogs feeding under your corn feeder. They will root it up and turn it into a little pond under it. I have some feeders penned to keep hogs out and other feeders outside a pen. I had to pour concrete under them to keep the hogs from rooting and creating said pond.

I've decided to setup up two separate feeder pens. One that will allow hogs in and one that hopefully will keep the hogs out or at least make it difficult.

I'm curious as to why you'd want a feeder pen for the hogs. To trap them?
