Hi Guys,

I bought a new 336c in 30/30 a month back, very pleased with it so far. Out of the box with regular old corelokt ammo i was getting roughly 3" - 4" groups resting on the hood of the truck at 80 yards. This was a massive relief as I had heard stories of people not being able to to hit paper at 25 yards with the new Remington made ones.

Despite this relative success I have to say that the buckhorn sights aren't ideal. Having tested out looking at our lighted feeder in the dark at 60 yards I can say that they were next to useless. Black on Black, covering the target.

So, I'm looking for suggestions. Ideally i want to keep it iron , i'm considering one of the Skinner or XS setups. That being said i'm open to suggestions.

I've already got my longer range rifle so this is really for hogs at 100 yards and less. There's a good chance i'll be in low light conditions so I need to know if ghost ring style sights even work in low light.

Show me your setups and tell me why you like them!

Thanks, as always.

I have a Redfield 2-7x33 on my 1895 GBL but if I were to do irons it'd be XS Ghost ring. Pricey but worth it. I only spent $25 more dollars & got a scope so you might want to consider that. I can get <1" groups w/325gr LeverEvolution ammo. @ 100yds.

Looks good John. Did you replace the front sight/post or is that the standard one?

Thanks

Both have been replaced. Its the XS Ghost Ring sight set I got from MidwayUSA for about $85. There is a great youtube video on how to swap them out. It took me less than 5 minuets. I had a scope on it and took off the rail and misplaced the reciever screws a few years ago and ordered them too from midway for like $4 for them. The back sight has a post that fits in the rear screw and one screw into the reciever. The front sight you pull off the hood, use the supplied drift and expose the rear screw. Take out the 2 screws and replace with the new front sight. Very easy install and you use red loctite under the sights to hold them in place. Now its very quick target acquistion and a nice sight picture.

You can get a cap to replace the front factory flip-up sight but it looks kinda strange to me, so I left it since flipped down its not in the way.

Look at the Skinner website. I will most likely be getting their express or alaskan peep setup.

If I were to do the scope setup I would do a scout setup I would get the XS rail with low mount rings and a scout scope. 1-4x20 or something with low power.

Either way you are going to enjoy it.

I have a Marlin 336 that I bought in 1966. It shoots great with any ammo except Leverevolution. Here's my 1894. It's a pristine 1973 rifle. I installed a Williams peep and higher front sight but the receiver was already drilled and tapped for the sight. Your new rifle may not be.

I'm using a Williams sight just like primitive hunter, but I didn't have to change out the front sight. Due to deteriorating eyesight I've been looking into fitting it with a red dot holographic/type sight.

Range report from today with the xs sights, was able to hold about a 3-4" group at 100 yds with the 45/70. Not to bad considering the front sight almost covered the entire target. Definitely good enough to put down a piggy!

Mine is just wearing it's factory irons. Guess I'm running behind. I'm thinking about something that works better in the dark, though.

Not the traditional route but works great for my favorite truck gun. Leupold 2X7, not that it is really needed but I can see the target lots better with my eyesight with the scope.

Williams fire sight link XS rail link

The Williams peep can be unscrewed and it is effectively a ghost right. With a light on the rail, it lights up the front fiber, as well as the target. Use one of those see through scope rings as a mount for my SF 6P.
