New to this forum today ! Much has been written about primer use, but my question is just opposite most that I've seen. I want to load some .44 mag. 240 gr. Hornady XTP. The loads I find listed for these bullets with H110 powder call for Mag. primers. Due to todays shortages , I only have standard large pistol primers...What will happen if they are used.

Thanks for any info.
John

I load my mine with standard primers. Same bullets with Winchester 296 powder. I am quite pleased with my results. Loaded up 100 rounds this past weekend.

Do you have Winchester WLP? They work as both a standard or magnum. I use them in my 45 colt for plinking loads, and H110 hotrod loads.

Welcome to the forum. welcome

I've been using standard primers in my .357 Mag loads using Win. 296 powder for years. IMO you should be ok.

Either will work fine. A mag primer is a little hotter primer, and will help ignite the slower powders better. You can add about .2 to .3 grains of powder to compensate for the lighter primer, if you want.

I've loaded .357 and .44 for years....never could tell the difference between standard and magnum primers at close distances. In rifles it will damn sure mess with your accuracy. Main reason I use magnum primers is I use 296 and was told ball powders are harder to ignite in a full case. It's why I also crimp the hell out of of them...

Pressures are different between the two with the hotter being the magnum primer and can raise pressures enough to change the POI.

I would recommend a really tight crimp, stiff enough that a ring comes off the top of the round. You can use standard primers but you want to ignite all of the powder and burn it all.....you need to give it time to burn before the bullet leaves. Only way to do that is a really stiff crimp.

I know in rifle rounds, changing primers can be like changing scopes. It will really mess with things at 100 yards and beyond.

Chad since you reload for a living. I am going to be reloading a few different calipers out of all of them I will need small and large pistol primers and small and large rifle primers ill be reloading 308 and 300 win mag could the lrp be used in the 300 so I don't have to buy lrmp or would you just suggest getting the lrmp
Same thing for the 357 mag ill be reloading 38 special and 40 s and w and prolly 9 eventually

What are your thoughts

Tribby, the .357 Mag, .38 Special, .40 S&W, and 9mm all use small pistol primers. No need for magnum primers, standard primers are fine. For .308 and .300 Win Mag, standard large rifle primers will be fine also. If all you can find is magnum primers, though, don't be afraid to use them. Just be aware that you might reach maximum loads a little quicker than with standard primers.

I reload for both of my 308's and use Fed 210 and Fed Match 210,
but when I've used Mag Primers I usually start about 1/2 grain lower and check the POI...My TRG is one of the unusal rifles and
pretty much has the same w/different loads and projectiles at 100
yds..even different wgt proj...But most of the more accurate loads are at least .05 grains off max..I've checked the velocitys
as I use Barnes X for hunting, ect..and it's always well above the charts..DD

I've been playing with 85-grain Ballistic Tips in my .25-06 using H4831SC, usually with Federal 210s. I made an ordering mistake a while back and ended up with some Federal 215s, so I decided to try them. With the magnum primers I get equivalent performance to standard primers with 0.2 grains less powder, including accuracy. There's a detectable difference---but at least in this case, but it's nothing earth shattering. Other combos may show more or less difference.
