Recommendation: remove the upper and the bolt, gunvise or sand bag said lower looking at a target at 100 yards, adjust the barrel to "look" at the target, adjust the scope until it matches, reassemble the upper onto the lower, fire a shot, adjust from there.

Katyhighpockets,
I know this isn't answering your direct question, but I would strongly advise skipping the laser boresite on an AR platform rifle.
Almost all rings designed for ARs are picatinny or weaver type, most of which are not windage or elevation adjustable (with exception to Burris Zee Rings or clones); meaning you're almost always going to perfectly aligned. If the scope is set at it's mechanical zero you should be on paper at close distances.
I've never mounted a scope on an AR and not been on paper at 50 (or even 100) yards, and I've done it more than a few times.
That said, if you're really set on a laser boresite, the sightmark one from cabelas seems to be pretty popular.

You should be on paper at 25 yards like others said. Sight in three inches low and move out to 100 yards.

I never use lasers, just do what FiremanJG said.. I do so many scope mounts testing optics I can get damned close first time.
I have found picking a small target far off and really trying to center it in the bore and then adjusting the scope to the same point gets me within a few inches at 100 or even 250 yards

Yup, FiremanJG is right on the money, but I've typically not even needed to do that for ARs. Just bolt up and go for the most part.
On bolt guns though, thats pretty much the only method anyone should be using (i.e. pull the bolt and fixate both bore and scope to a distant object, and adjust from there)

I'm not home to look at the brand but the one that uses different sizes of plastic bushings for different calibers is a piece of crap. This one to be exact. The on/off switch broke within 5 minutes. You can take it out and put it right back in and get different results every time. Bushnell Boresighter

Yep, the eye don't lie. The laser do.

Totally agree with the above.

I have had great sucess using a sighted in Eotech placed infront of new optic to bore sight (scope or red dot). You will be about 6 inches high so keep your adjustments low of the dot.
