lablab, cowpeas, purple hull peas, black eyed peas. Do the soil test add what is recommended. Depending on deer density may want to consider cost of fencing, electric tape, to keep em off of it so it can get established. I am trying Whitetail Institute PowerPlant this spring contains lablab, soybean, peas, sorghum, and sunflower, latter two for stalks for soybeans and peas to climb up. I will be naysayed for not buying from local feedstore but have compared pricing here and not significant difference and I like 25 years of deer liking it science behind what am planting. Have tried local seed here with limited success in Harrison county deer just graze it down too quick. Just my two cents and I am local to your area. Good luck and do what works for you. I have enjoyed trying different plantings to see what the deer preferred. Hopefully others will chime in with good or better thoughts on your question.

There's probably things planted in East Texas that don't need to be announced. grin

i am trying the spring mix from turner seed, hopefully with the diversity of the mix they wont keep it mowed down. this is my first real try at a spring plot too so i will be able to see what does well on my place.

COWPEAS (RED RIPPER) 15%
COWPEAS (IRON & CLAY) 15%
SOYBEANS (LAREDO) 15%
BLACK-EYED PEAS (CALIFORNIA) 15%
SUNN HEMP 12%
LAB LAB (RIO VERDE) 10%
BUCKWHEAT 6%
OKRA (SPINELESS) 5%
MUNGBEANS 5%
CHICORY 2%

i will have about an acre of this mix bordered by about .33-.5 an acre of alyce clover/chicory.

Last year we only grew weeds- any suggestions to prevent this?

Roundup either before your plow or after when the weeds come up. Wait two weeks before planting/plowing to kill the weeds to let the Roundup work.

Cowpeas this time of year do well.

Preparation of the soil is a big thing. Round-up it, wait two weeks, disc thoroughly, fertilize, plant, disc again or drag.

I Planted an acre of LabLab plus this past weekend in Trinity County. Now I am hoping for rain. Planted buckbeans last year and they did very well. Hoping they come back this spring.
