You have a budget of $200.00. This will stay in your truck. Handgun, rifle or shotgun? Please share your thoughts.
I looked at a Heritage Rough Rider today. Less than 2 bills. Thought was leave it in the truck.
If you lose it, drop it in the stock tank, oh well.
I'd like to think there are better options.
So, what is that one firearm that stays with you, much like that spare roll of tp you keep stashed in the crossbed toolbox.
Knowing neither one cost a whole lot of coin.
Thanks fellas.

One of the Rossi combo guns run about that price. .22lr/.410 and I think there's a .243/20gauge that runs a bit more. You can usually get an old 30/30 for that much if you wave cash.

Mossberg 500, 12 or 20 ga, can buy under $200 easily on the used market, can keep it loaded with birdshot for quick disposal of possum or skunk, shoot squirrel or rabbit or dove, switch into camo & get turkey call, or crow call for fun, pond jump ducks, can carry around tank on sling for water mocs, can also load with rifled slugs and have an accurate gun for 75-100 yds for deer and hogs. Nothing has the versatility of a shotgun. The Mossie 500 is carried by police and sportsman the world over, I'm not saying it it is the best shotgun, but I am staying under $200.

Do you have a CHL? If yes, .22 would be okay. If no, you need more oomph. I'd go with pump 12 strictly for emergencies. It would cover rabid dog, rabid man, hog and whatever else. You said like my John Wayne paper, in case of emergency wipe, I mean break, glass. Paul

Used ranchhand bumper....packs quite a punch My cheapo in the truck lately is a WBY VG1 257roy, but you'd be cutting it close on the used market.

I'd think it would depend on whether you want it for varmints or Varmints. For the odd critter I'd choose a .22 or 20 ga but just as a "I'm not worried if I lose it" gun I probably would get a High Point 9 or .40.

I have an old Marlin 25N that stays in the truck, but I've thought about replacing it with a 22 Mag. I've got a little NEF .410 that stays strapped on the 4 wheeler with a box of assorted shells. I'd rather have a 12 ga, but this one was $20.

OP was for truck gun, I think it is illegal to shoot dove & duck with centerfire rifle. Also .243 is not the best choice for carrying around the stock tank for snakes. Still got to put a scope on it to be much more accurate past 100 yds so we are back to Mossberg 500 to stay below $200.

Handi Rifle in .223 with a 3X9X40 is my numero uno!
Savage 24 O/U .223/12ga is running close, but it was a little more than $200.

I'd be rubbing it in your face if I posted a pic of the rifle next to the dead Tyrannosaurus Rex I just took down who was trying to eat my truck. But I won't do that. I'll be nice.

I've never kept a shotgun in the truck full time, and have needed one a time or two. But what would be wrong with keeping a centerfire single shot rifle AND a single shot 12 ga? Me thinks I'm gona hav two truck guns.
I drive a four door and both would fit just fine.

Cheap 20 gauge SxS with bird shot in one barrel and buckshot in the other.
Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

High point JHP 45acp. Load it and stash it with no big worries about care or losing it. The one I had never had a single malfunction and was decently accurate.
If its a truck gun for being out on property I generally have a .22, shotgun, or the SKS. All falling under that price range.
