I succesfully planted clover in late Sept 06. I had a soil test done in the early spring. After getting soil test results back I put out 2000lbs of lime per acre and disked the ground. It takes about 6 months for lime to fully do its job and clover is very ph sensitive. Prior to disking I killed off the grass with RoundUp. When planting time came I disked the ground, ran a drag over it, broadcast the seed, and ran a chain drag over it. Then I put out 400 lbs of fertilizer per acre and prayed for rain.
I had a great stand from fall thru to the next summer and then it died and has not came back. The deer absolutely loved the clover while it was alive though. I am getting ready try again in a few weeks.

a neutral pH is very important with clover

fertilize with more phosphorus

do not plant any deeper than 1/8", best is to scatter on top of bare soil...no need to cover

Clover is awesome, for both attracting and providing winter nutrition....GOOD LUCK!!

Im sure all depends on where you hunt and how the soil is........we hunt in east texas, a mix of sandy soil. We planted in late September, tilled, used a hand broadcaster for the seed, fertilized (o-20-15), and lightly dragged the plot. The plot turned out excellent.

I used a tractor and 6'disk. I used a broad cast spreader on the tractor to dispence the seed, the seed was dry. I waited until there was some rain in the forecast before I planted. Don't put the seed very deep or it will not grow. If your soil ph is too acidic the clover seed will not germinate. Ph needs to be above 6 for clover to thrive. Im in East Texas, I have great soil but due to the Pine trees occasionaly Lime is neccessary.

We've had great luck with "Sweet Yellow Clover" in West Texas near Aspermont. Other varieties of clover sold at discount and feed stores around Dallas are for areas that get more rain and have different soil types than West Texas. Doesn't need nitrogen fertilizer but responds well to P & K. Broadcast on top of the ground in fall when you have a forecast of 2-3 days of good rain.
